Can anyone suggest some good manufacturers to start looking for a wheeled shack that drops down onto the ice, and has a back door that I can drive an ATV into, and also has bunks to sleep on? I've heard of Extreme shacks, that I think are made in Northern MN. I believe there is another company in SE SD, like around Brookings or Watertown? The one concern that I have with some of these shacks is that they seem to ride really low to the ground when being pulled. My guess is that they will hang up on drifts when being pulled across the lake and that they will drag when you drive onto the lake anywhere that the ice is heaved up a bit, or uneven...? Is this a problem? Does anyone have any advise on things to look for and get in a house like this or not get? Thanks!

I think the ice houses made in SESD are called the Lodge. I have a shack made in Iowa thats pulls low in the front so I put a hitch on my truck that has less drop. I am going tro buy a hitch that can be raised or lowered by turning a bolt on the top of it. My brother has one and loves it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am in Iowa, where can I find info on the shack that you bought in Iowa? Are you happy with it ? Does anyone have any likes/dislikes about these types of units, or thoughts on either The Lodge or Xtreme brands ?
Thanks again!

My shack is a bare bones ice house which I wanted because it is light. I had them build in a 29 inch wiide storage box in the front which doubles as a bunk. You could build in a bunk above this one if you want. This company doesn't build in bunks and dinette areas. It is gel coated fiberglass on the outside and on the roof. It is the same stuff that they build service bodies for telephone and power trucks out of and is easy to maintain. My shack was dirty when I brought it home from the farm shed that I store it in. It rained and it was clean agoin. I had them panel my walls with FRP paneling which is water proof and I did the ceiling with the same stuff after I ran more wiring in for speakers and fans. I had it weighed when I got it and it weighed in at 1,520 lbs. All I have added is a 15,000 btu heater and a mattress which probably don't weigh 40 lbs together. If you want something that is completely finished with a bunch of bells and whistles, this isn't a shack for you. It pulls about as easy as a 16foot boat does even though it has a square front. It has double doors for loading an ATV, but it doesn't have a door in the front. One of the reasons that I bought this shack other than liking the way that it is buillt is that this company has their employees build these shacks rather than laying the employees off during the winter slack period. Every stud is glassed to the outside shell in three places and it is insulated with 1 1/2 inch bead board. I think that once it is warmed up you could keep it plenty warm with a small buddy heater. They are located in Hayfield, Iowa. Mine is 6 1/2'x12' and they also make one that is 6 1/2'x16'. www.hayfieldind.com

What about the Zack Shack?

Anyone have one of these ?

I'm in eastern SD - where can I find a dealer ? I hear they are a pretty bare bones unit also.

I'd like to find a used one for sale....

Thanks for all the help guys. I bought the 16' Hayfield. Very pleased with it so far. I bought it without any holes in the floor and without carpet installed so that I can put the holes where I want them after I get heater, stove, table, etc. all installed. I also got it without any "paneling" on the walls so that I can run wires and lights and switches where I want them before covering the walls. So far I have just insulated the floor from the bottom side between the floor joists with 2" certifoam board, and installed some more lights and reflectors on the outside. Hope to get more work done in a week or so. Please post any neat must-haves that you can think of for our first perm. shack. Thanks!

I hope you enjoy your Hayfield house as much as I have enjoyed mine. I have kept mine plain jane on the inside to keep my hitch weight light. If we don't get a bunch of snow early I will pe pulling it with my atv until we get thick ice.
