I probably will take some heat for this, but what the heck.

Before line counter reels were the "thing to have" we used to use marked line. It was made by Mason, I think. It had a blue band every 10 ft. Worked really well on a levelwind reel. I was wondering if anyone still uses this stuff. I think it would be great for a guy just starting out who doesnt really know if he wants to spend the cheddar on a line counter or doesnt want to mess around with one of those clip on counters.

Someone probably still does make the stuff, but I havent seen any in years.

I posted this on the boats and motors page without realising it, sorry about that!

PJ,

I remember that stuff. Like you said, seems to have gone by the wayside. I agree, good idea. (Although, that line was not the greatest quality) I'd love to see Berkley come out with a marked line. I think there is certainly a market for it.....

Seems like a million dollar idea for up the taking!!

There was another under the Wille (boards) brand too. I haven't seen this type line in years. It would be a great alternative to expensive LC's for a guy just starting out. I wonder if any line manufacturers are listening.

Before the line counters were in the budget I used a braid (Gorilla?) that was white and could be easily marked with a magic marker.

I still have one spool of the willes brand left, I use it on my 4 level wind Abu Garcias, they are easy to use and bullet proof. The markings on the line are easy to see by the stern light when long line trolling at night . I would like to see someone come out with it again ,It was called , "Crank bait'n line", No way am I trading my reels and the line Wille works much better than those ad on line counters that always seem to get hosed up in the rod locker. Is any one from the line manufacturs listening .

You can mark any fishing line today just use your imagination a little bit. How I mark my mono you can use a permanent black magic marker, your braided lines the same thing and for my wire line I use a black lacquer paint when I don't want this mark anymore I wipe it off with a clear lacquer. You can see I am a little old fashioned but I bet you my method is more accurate than those line counters.I believe in spending money on good quality reels and when your buying a line counter reel I do not see any quality in them at all. I though Stren made a depth counter line? Maybe that was a few years back. When I am not using line counters, I just have a piece of tape on my rod to the reel that measures 1 ft. and just count my pulls. Takes a bit longer when you are trolling deeper but it works.

Yes it was Stren that made it a few years ago. I have not seen it available for 6 - 7 years.

Place two nails exactly 10 ft. apart. (in something that won't anger the wife) Wrap the line around the nails while counting the wraps for the amount of line you need.

Then use permanent marker, black or red, and mark about 2 inches either side of the nails on all strands of the line. Tie one end to the reel and crank.
