View Full Version : Off Shore OR18 snapper vs OR16
Set up all my boards with the tattle flag last night and tried a few different ways since I had a bunch of clips.
It seemed the best combo was the lighter black (OR12 or 14?? stock) front and the OR16 (red with pin) back and when you have a fish give a tug to release the front clip and bring it in without the resistance of the board to fight. No opportunity to try the real thing, but wondering if anyone else has had any experience.
All told, I can't find a reason to use the snapper (OR 18) except the actual mechanism is easier to open and close if your hands are cold.
Thanks in advance,

As far as the snapper release goes, it really shines with the superlines. Other than that, I use OR 16's.
Is the 16 not tight enough for Fire or Power Pro in 20-30# diameter?
Thanks,

You'll be fine with that set up as long as you keep an eye on the pad on the OR-16. Since the OR-14 will not hold the superline, the responsibility is laid on the OR-16. If you simply double wrap the OR-16, and leave the OR-14 on the front unwrapped, then you shouldn't have any problems at all. If you don't double wrap the back release, then plan on replacing the pads quite often. The superline will eat right through it if it keeps slipping, due to that release taking on all the responsibility of holding the board on the line.
I don't like my boards to release, ever, so I do use the Snapper on the front and the OR-16 on the back. So far so good...;-)
Have a great season!

Forgot to mention the double wrap. Doing that already with the original clips and will continue with the 16.
Do you think there would be a noticeable difference in getting the fish to the boat any faster using the single clip method?

You don't want one of your clips to release. As Juls said, you want both clips to hold. If the front releases your board will flop all over and really rip at the clip and destroying you pads. Keep it all simple and use at least OR16s on your boards. Off Shore has excellent products, but they should be ashamed of even selling the boards with those black clips. Everyone I know has switched there boards over to the red clips for holding power.
Have fun trolling. The more you do it, the more you can polish your technique. It is an artform in itself.
Enjoy,

If you don't want to spend any more on new clips you can take the springs out of the black clips or any other clip for that matter and replace them with a heavier spring.A grinder will come in handy for getting the springs the right length.Just a cheap skate not willing to pay $7.00 a pair for something that should have come with the boards to begin with.

My 2 cents - Retrofit one board with Church Tackle clips, espec if fishing fireline. You'll retrofit your other ones before the summer ends.
Tattle flags don't work if your line slips through either set of clips.

good point.

Thanks to all.
Decided to run the snapper front and or16 rear. It seemed like a good idea at first(being able to bring in the fish without the resistance of the board), but you all have prevented the normal mistakes.
Thanks again.
