Why is it when I am sitting still fishing my depthfinder screen keeps moving? It seems as though structure and fish are going right by. Thanks for any replies. God bless

You really need to read your instruction manual on this one. The unit is "scrolling". Its not like a tv screen.

Your depthfinder is constantly sending and recieveing signals(read sound waves) therefore the screen is always moving. When you look at your depthfinder the new information appears on the right hand side of the screen, once it is printed that information is actually history. Having that history is what allows a depthfinders to paint a picture, so to speak.

As to structure going by when you are sitting still, well, it is almost impossible to sit absolutly still on water unless it is frozen. Even on a calm day boat wakes, lake currents, etc. will move you around. Your depthfinder tracks these movements, at least movements up and down. I hope I was helpful. I will be giving depthfinder seminars across the upper midwest during March. Go back a few pages and look for post that says Free Seminars for times and dates.(The post is off the boards, do a search for free seminars)

The sonar is displaying activity under your boat. The most recent activity is displayed on the right of the screen and scrolls to the left giving you a brief history of what just occurred. Everything you see are objects moving in and out of the signal cone of the sonar. Could be fish, could be debris or other objects. PJ is right though. For you to somewhat understand what I just wrote requires you to read the instruction manual and maybe a book on the basics of fish finders/sonars.

How come the fish always swim Right to left on the graph? They are always faced to the left too? :-)

Any suggestions on good books for sonars/fish finders? I've read the manual on my bottomline and my Pinpoint, but I'm not overly impressed. Would really enjoy reading more on this subject and yes I am a dork.
Thanks,

Go to www.lowrance.com website. They have some very good basic tutorials on sonar - with pictures!
