Web site won't work. You need to visit a store that still carries them. In the last two days, I bought out my local Radio Shack with the help of neighbors. Got all 16 they had left. So dont try the Fond du Lac, WI store.

I telephoned my nearest Radio Shack and was able to make the purchase over the phone with a credit card. I just picked them up yesterday. They're a nice unit for the price. I have heard of some say that their local Radio Shack still had them for $69 yet. Just bring the clearance price to their attention and they can confirm this through their computers and give you the correct price. I'm not sure why they're full price on-line yet. It is worth mentioning that this same unit went for $99.99 this past Christmas so $9.99 after rebate is a pretty good deal!
Pat
When I saw your post, I went to my local Radio Shack and picked up 2. Even without the rebate, Which I checked out on the Motorola web site it is a great deal. Five years ago I paid 70 a piece for orginal Talkabout with no display!

called our 2 local Radio Shacks today and put 2 of these on hold til next week. I printed up the Motorola rebatew form and after reading it it says---------Mail in ORIGINAL REBATE CERTIFICATE-not a photocopied one. at the end it also says in bold letters---PHOTOCOPIES NOT ACCEPTED. Does anyone that bought these radios get these ORIGINAL REBATE CERTIFICATES from RADIO SHACK or how else do you apply for the rebate if you cannot use the copied ones off the Motorola website? Thanks
punch1
03-10-2002, 07:08 PM
Pete and anyone else, I too noticed that the rebate says to mail in the original and so I called Motorola to confirm that the one printed from their web page would work and I was assured it would as long as you send in the original print from the web page and not a photo copy. Make sense? Vheck for yourselves by calling Motorola in the US 1-800-353-2729 or in Canada at 1-800-461-4575.
As to the person having trouble opening the page you can either try from another computer or download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program is necessary to view .pdf files. I had Adobe 5.0 but had to download the latest one (5.5) to get it to work. Try www.adobe.com for the install.
Finally you will notice that the print out is quite small but rest assured they said that was what to send in.

Went to the Radio Shack in Batavia NY to get in on this deal. Even though I have a couple of Audiovox 5 mi. range radios. Figure can't pass on a deal this great. They had the radio in stock marked down from 69.00 to 29.00. When I asked them about the rebate they all looked at me like I was touching myself. 1 guy said he would look into it but he knew of no rebate....lol figures. I also told him to check out this thread and gave him site addy.

You are to send in the following:
1) Original copy of the rebate that you filled out.
2) Your original receipt with the price of the units circled.
3) Proof of purchase from each unit. In this case cut out of the model number located in the lower right hand corner of the front cardboard of each unit and send those along with the above items.
As for the question of being able to get to the page with the rebate, it is a .pdf file and you need Adobe Acrobat reader to view and print it. I had the Acrobat 5.o and it still didn't work but once I upgraded to the 5.05, i hadno problems. It's all free at www.adobe.com.

Even our 2000$ motorolas at work which are like a police radio are not water proof. They are intrinsically safe but not water proof.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Pat,..I picked up 6 of em,..I already had a pair of the 2 mile ones and last year I got a pair of the 5 mile ones. I think you get about half that range in both in most areas,..VERY optimum conditions you prob can get those ranges but its a great deal for some uses,..a mile or two on a lake is a pretty good distance to contact friends or network,...I'm going to donate these to a Ecological center in Mexico that does some really good work in trying to preserve turtles,..your advice might save a few of these gentle giants. If anyone is having trouble finding the MOTOROLA 2-way radios now, RADIO SHACK in Duluth, Minn., has 22 left. Ask for Stephanie: 218-727-2916. She will mail them to you if you ask her to.
Thanx Punch1! I picked up 5 in Moundsville WV this afternoon. Wanted 6, but 5 was all they had. Clerk said there was a bunch of them in a store in Youngstown Ohio, if anyone is interested. That Radio Shack Item # again is 21-1847-Talkabout T289

Are you supposed to just cut out the "Model T289" on the front cover and send that in with the other stuff? Is that what the rebate is asking for?
Dave in Mpls
03-14-2002, 12:18 PM
Has anybody actually used the T289? I realize it's hard to go wrong for $9.99, but was curious what general thoughts were in regard to the radio.

03-14-2002, 12:54 PM
Hey Dave,
Me and another guy at work bought some and have given them a brief test. They seem to work really well! I tested them in a heavily developed residential area. One guy inside and I made it about 6-8 blocks before deciding I was getting too much exercise..at which point reception was load and clear. The guy at work says his kids talk to their pals from their bedroom's...which are only 4 blocks apart. Not great tests I realize but it is all I can offer. I figure once I get em on the open water they will indeed make the 2 mile range. I am curious as to why they would even be $29.99? I know when I bought mine at Radio Shack they guy said he isn't making any money at $29.99 and that price is meant to lure buyers in and they make their money selling you the rechargable batteries or Motorola battery pack for it. He wasn't even aware of the rebate. So after limited use there is nothing that stands out as the reason they can be purchased for $9.99.

Just picked up 6 here in Milwaukee, WI. Saw this post awhile ago and since I have 4 already didn't pay much attention to it. Since there aren't many of us on WC central from New Mexico, there are plenty of them in the Radio Shack Company Stores. Private franchises refuse to honor the $29.99 price since they pay ~$37 to buy them. So, this is a very good deal.
Now, where's a similar deal on a Lund 2025 ProV?

You guys are great. I have saved thousands of dollars over the past 2-3 years as a result of your help, first by always buying the right piece of equipment the first time, second by avoiding mistakes made by others and learning from their own experiences, and finally on deals like this. I have been helped by both registered and non-registered posters alike. You know what, I would even pay a yearly subscription fee for WC, it is that valuable to me. THANKS for helping me again.
I just bought 6 of these nice radios for the price of what one was last month, with change to spare, enough for each hunter of my hunting group. Radio Shack was shipping a box of whatever was not sold there tonight to their Fondulac store for a waiting list they have there, so if you are waiting you may be in luck soon. I got the rebate form downloaded ok with your help, and even confirmed with Motorola that yes they will take it. Hey Pat, thanks for starting this thread. I hope more of you can get in on this before it is to late. At the end someone should count up how many radios actually got bought as a result of this post.
Had a lengthy talk with the Motorola people and they said they are selling these to clear them out. Accesories for the units are limited to non existant. They no longer make the rechargable NIMH for these so I went to Radio Shack and purchased the Radio Shack NIMH AA batteries and charger package. Pricey, but the idling length time on the units surpassed 24 hrs. The AA batteries can be used for other needs as well. Motorola also said they want the sticker with code and model number attached to the clear plastic casing needs to be cut out and sent back with the downloaded rebate coupon and receipt. Rebate limited to six units allowed per address. All in all, this is one great deal.
punch1
03-15-2002, 05:28 AM
MBI,
What puzzles me is that over the telephone they are telling you that they want the "sticker with code and model number attached to the clear plastic casing" included with the other items when submitting the rebate. The problem I have is that the original rebate makes no mention of including that. I, as I'm sure many others also, have already sent in the rebate. I suspect they will honor it as it still conforms to their original requirement.
Did the person you talked to offer any reasoning for having to include that when it was not mentioned on the rebate slip? Please let us know.
Pat
I'm guessing the reason why they want you to send back the sticker attached to clear plastic is that it is the best reference for the model number and tracking each specific unit sold by bar code. If you call today, you may get a different person and a different answer for what they need. Hope this helps.

I just hope they don't pull the ol' "rebate denied" b.s.
Has anyone got their rebate back yet?

03-15-2002, 07:35 AM
Hey Dave, I have the FR50's were $89 for 2 a couple years ago which look like lower model than these.
They work great I don't think I have ever gotten a 2 mile range out of them but have never checked. I couldn't talk to people with Cobra's on the water at about .5 -.75 miles as soon as they went around a point. That could be their fault though. You can't go wrong with Motorola, they make some quality units! Some of the cheap noname brands do have some nice features I don't like FM/Weather band radio
also.
They work great for long multi vehicle trips also.
Later,
Ferny.
