If you search the archives you will find a TON of info on both of these units, along with some flames on the versus issue. Here's my quick pass at it:
Lowrance, better picture from the higher pixels/vertical inch.
Pinpoint, faster scroll rate, more accurate pic of what is under you at speed.
Lowrance, can integrate a good chart/gps that is proven.
Pinpoint, new to the GPS world.
Neither matters if you use a separate GPS unit like I do.
If I had to decide "from scratch" again, I would probably still go with the Pinpoint, but only because I like the networking and depth track features they provide that the X15 does not. If I did not care about those things...I think the X15 would win for it's prettier picture.
Over & out.

Hey Walleyefisher-Not to add fuel to the fire, but I'm in exactly the same boat and have done extensive research on both then ran into a professional on the trail and also a reputable guide. He told me to check out the new Humminbird Legend 3000. I did and was impressed. Go under search on this site and just write in Legend and you will see other favorable reports. This unit is not made by Humminbird as of yet but made by Zercom and has been an outstanding unit. I still have not made a decision yet either but am definately not ruling out the Legend. Good luck
As Snoogans said both have their pluses. I'm sure Jonathan's opionion is ok too. The hummingbird and lowrance both use a lower scroll rate, simply because pinpoint owns the patent on the higher scroll. So if your sitting still or running slow the hummingbird and lowrance are wonderful units. If you want to see fish 10 ft back under the boat when it scrolls across the screen when doing 20mph or more the pinpoint will outclass the rest. Scroll rate means its the time it takes to come across the screen after you pass over the fish. A lower scroll means the fish could be 100 ft back or more before it comes across the screen. The higher pixel rate of the lowrance screen helps the scroll rate too I believe. If this is wrong someone more knowlegable could you enlighten me? This is what I picked up from other posts here. CW

I have a couple of pinpoint units. They list patent numbers in the manuals so I went to the Patent office web site. None of the three patents listed for pinpoint claimed a higher update speed as being exclusive to them. Their patents deal with the depth/contour tracking.

Well..... Actually, I'm going to put a Pinpoint on the bow. I recently bought the 109lbs Motorguide with the pinpoint transducer. I was just getting cold feet and am trying to make sure that Pinpoint is the way to go. I know the Lowrance is awesome.... But I've heard great things about Pinpoint as well. Thanks for any input. As of now I think I'll continue my path towards Pinpoint.
Thanks again.
Good Luck and Good Fishing

Just giong to pick up the new boat next week or this weekend.I have decided to put on the x15 combo off the console and the legend3000 off the bow. have seen the old version of the legend on other boats that I have fished out of and the scroll rate was one of the fastest I've seen.
The only issue that I have heard, and this was spuratic at best, about the older series(lpg 2000), was that at high speeds it would not get a reading, I am assumming that this has been figured outand the problems resolved. This did not effect my disission anyway since it will be on the bow and high speeds will not be an issue.

both are very good units, I like the faster scroll speed and a more accurate detail of what I am looking at with the Pinpoint.
Livebait, In your case with the Mg motor that is pinpoint ready, I would surely go with the pinpoint because the interfernce issues with varible speed motors. You will not get interfernce with this combination and it is very possible that you could bet a lot of interfernce using the X15.

I love my X15, and dont know much about the Pinpoint, except that my buddy just bought one, so Ill be able to compare.
On a similar, but different note , I would like to take this opportunity to hank the folks at LEI for a great product. At this time last year, they were under an intense amount of heat over the X15 and its associated problems. While it was frustrating to have a brand new, $1100 unit, not functioning, they finally got V2.1 to fix all the problems. For that, I thank them. For all the users that have bought X15s since, that have V2.1 installed already, you owe the early purchasers a beer. I hope James at LEI support doesnt miss me. LOL
