Linkage

My 150 Opti. failed to go into gear . It just grinds the gears. It goes into reverse fine. I had a boat guy look at it and after checking the linkage he said it needs adjusting as it is not going far enough into the forward gear. He gave me some general insructions on how to adjust it , but am not real confident. Our local mechanic is gone for the winter and the next closest is 150 miles. Anyone got any help for me?
