I've been using Vanish Transition (6#) on my spinning reels for vertical jigging and pitching jigs. Does anyone know if there is a difference in the stiffness of the original Vanish fluorocarbon from the Transition?

Vanish is stiffer than Transition. Transition has had the benefit of a newer, more casting-friendly formula, whereas for the most part, Vanish still uses it's original formulation.

Next question--does anyone know of anybody that carries the transition in bulk spools (2000 yds) Cabela's is discontinuing carrying the bulk spools, and the only place I can find any is on ebay, and I don't want to take a chance that it's too old.

I would switch to the new Trilene 100% flourocarbon as it's much less stiff. I would imagine that any dealer near you should be able to order a bulk spool of it.

Yes, Vanish Transition is available in bulk 2000 yd spools as is also the improved formula regular Vanish. Transition is available only down to 6 lb test in the bulk spools and Vanish also is only available down to 6 lb test on bulk spools. Just now checked and the Trilene Fluorocarbon is also available in bulk 2000 yd spools, also only down to 6 lb test.
Both Vanish & Transition show to be the same diam through all lb test whereas Trilene Fluor is slightly larger, example:
Transition 6# = 0.009 diam
Vanish 6# = 0.009 diam
Trilene Fluor 6# = 0.010 diam
As someone said already, you should be able to go to a good tackle dealer that carries a good line of Berkley/Pure Fishing products and order a bulk "Service" spool. If you have trouble locating a dealer to order one for you, contact me and I'll help you find a dealer in or close to your area.

I have been jigging Walleye with Bass Pro XPS Fluro for the last 4 years. I have found it to be better for me than any other Fluro I have used. I use 6# in Lakes and 10# on the Mississippi River.
Good luck, Mike Kansas

I have the best luck with p-line fluorocarbon, never got past the constant tangles with vanish.

The best floro I personally have used is P Line Halo.
I never used anything but Trilene but I had terrible results with Vanish. It is Junk IMHO.
I still like Trilene XT mono in some situations, but now I use almost 100% Fireline with a P Line leader.
Never tried Transition or the new Pro Grade Berkley 100% Floro. Vanish left a bad taste in my mouth for Berkley Florocarbon lines.
FYI, all Berkley products can be purchased direct from their website via credit card. You should be able to get a bulk spool of Vanish there.

For 6 lb test application, I use P-line fluorocarbon as well. i haven't been a big fan of the new stuff p-line has been throwing out, the evolution line is just terrible and the Halo isn't bad, but I feel its weaker than the regular fluorocarbon p-line..
you can't go wrong with BPS XPS fluorocarbon though, its a known secret that Toray fishing line of Japan creates BPS's fluorocarbon and their (Toray) fluorocarbon lines sells for $20-30 dollars for a 110 meter spool. Great line for the price..
as far as vanish or transition goes, I feel that their breaking strength for the diameter is terrible. vanish transition for me has been a nightmare due to its absolutely horrible abrasion resistant.. i would snag my 4lb or 6lb line on weeds sometimes and it'd break off..

The Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon is much better than either the Vanish or Vanish Transition, imho. It's much easier casting, and seems to be more durable that either of the Vanish lines.
I'm not a big fluorocarbon guy, most of my fishing is done with 10# Trilene XT or 10/4 Fireline.

I have fly fished for years on waters that you supposedly couldn't catch fish with out floro... like the Blue, the Frying pan and the South platte. I have done as well as the rest of the fishermen and also been lucky enough to catch fish on std mono or copolymer like froghair... I think it comes down to presentation more than anything, in the flyworld or the spinning world...
Duckbutter,
Save your money and forget the florcarbon line and associated problems.
Do some testing and compare - on identical rods and baits any difference between good quality mono and florocarbon lines.
I have tried flor lines - both in the leader format as well as the full length lines for my fishing and in the waters I fish have found no advantage to the floro lines and quite a few disadvantages.
-------
I will say that if you fish in waters with rough and abrasive bottoms, if you fish where there are a lot of zebra mussells and need the abraision resistance of a line. Then, the use of a 10 foot leader or so might make some sense.
However, if you use a good 10 lb mono leader and check it from time to time for abraision or nicks and change if necessary - you won't have any problems with that either.
That is the great thing about the free market system. Every person can choose and make his own choices. Use the products that make sense to you - both from an application as well as an economic value.
However, use your head. Buy a small quantity of a new product - test it a lot and only buy larger quantities, if there is some user or econoimic advantage to the product.
Don't buy and use a product, just because somebody, or some ad told you to use it. Buy a sample of the product, test it extensively and then use it if it makes sense to you.
Take care

I spoke with Berkley and they are discontinuing the bulk spools of the Transition (red and gold). I haven't tried the new Berkley Flurocarbon and will give that a try next spring. I still have about 600 yds of Transition left so it will be interesting to compare them side by side---will also try a spool of the P line fluoro----I tried some several years ago and didn't care for it, but it's worth another shot.
