About to take the plunge into one of these two vehicles. Anyone out there with some experience on them? I liked the 6.0L in the test drive, but am looking for some guys that have some experience with them. Also any comments on the 2500 or the 2500HD? Will be pulling a 620. Thanks in advance for your input!

Bought a new 2002 GMC 1500hd Crewcab 6.0 This year have 10k on it and just returned from Fla. to Ohio Sun.pulling a 19' glass boat with 125 Merc. I also pull a 25' Sportcraft to Erie all summer. I love the truck and the 6.0 pulls them both with ease. The truck is 8600GVW rated the same as the 2500HD I avg 12mpg pulling the 19' home and about 10 with the big one. 16 has been tops in every day driveing and more like 12 13 avg. Have owned many 350's and the 6.0 will blow them in the weeds, and most any thing I've come up against the motor is smooth and the truck is very quiet and a pleasure to drive. So far I love the truck and would recommend it. I bought 2001 chev 1500HD crew cab with the 6.0,
it is awesome. It has more power than my 97-vortec
350 had. In my daily driving it gets at least as good
gas mpg as the 350. I have the same gear ratio
on them 3.73. On the highway the mpg isnt
as good though. I pull a 29ft camper and it has no
problem. I would recommend the 6.0, I like it!!!!

Well we'll have the same set up 2002 2500 HD and a 620. The truck pulls wonderful with the 6.0. I ordered it with a 4.10 rear end, which in appears to have been a wee bit of over kill. The motor turns around 2400 at 70 and mileage is at or right below 12. Towing doesnt appear to have any effect on the mileage. I owned a 2000 z71 1500 previously and was happy with that as well, after I had the springs re-arched and added to....The 2500 HD is sitting on a 1 ton chasis, thus rides stiff as well, the breaking for a large truck is great...I bought mine from Howie Lee over at Friendly Chev, hes a bass man, but he gives the walleye guys a fair shake...

To clarify, the 2500HD is actually rated for 9200 lbs (GVWR).

Pretty much dito: I have 02 Chevy 1500HD Crew with 3.73 and 6.0and pulling 620 one trip so far, 600 miles round trip. Pulled good even in the wind but had to Use 3rd gear with the Tow/haul feature on. dealer told me I could drive in Overdrive with Tow/haul button pushed but when going up slight hills on Interstate at 70MPH it would keep shifting down so I just left it in 3rd. Drank the gas though at 70-75 mph on intertate with 20 mph side wind I got 9mpg. Around town and short highway trips with no boat I get 11-12. Gotta pay to play. Love the truck and all the room.

I appreciate the responses guys. Mileage is about where I figured. It kind of hurts. Going to have to get used to the 12 mpg not towing. I was only getting that towing anyway with my 1500, and it was working real hard. Most of my miles are towing anyway. One more question. Would you go with the 4.10 or the 3.73 gears? Thanks again.

Go with the 3:73 the 4:10 is over kill except when pulling stumps. Huck

I'll have to disagree.

I have heard from many people that say that getting the 3.73's was the worst mistake. 4.10's won't hurt you mileage that much, and you'll have more towing capacity. I've found that you need to get the RPM's up a little on these new motors (5.3 and 6.0) to get into the effective power curve. Otherwise you'll be pulling down the highway at 1500-1700 RPM's where there isn't the greatest amount of torque, causing the tranny to downshift on hills. If you can pull over 65 mph, she'll pull right down and go like wildfire with either motor and 3.73's. Towing in a 55 mph zone is a pain.

BTW...If you are looking at a 2002 HD, you can only get 4.10's with the 6.0L anyway. 3.73's are not an option.

Not to pick a fight but.....I have the 4.10, was an option , not stock, I believe the stock is a 3.83......

I bought a 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 running the 6.0. 90,000 miles on her now, 30,000 miles towing my boat!! I tow a 20' Crestliner I've had no problems. Excellent in the mountains enough power to get the job done for a small block...

No, starting in the 2002 year, the only available gear ratio for a 2500HD with the 6.0L is the 4.10 rear end.

I don't know too much about the 6.0 L engine. I've driven the 5.3, and personally, I liked the torque that the Ford 5.4 had over the Chevy 5.3. I'd be scared to buy a GM Vortec engine too, as they've had piston slap problems that GM is refusing to fix, claiming that it's normal engine operation. If you are insistant upon getting a GM truck, have you thought about the diesel? I know it costs more, but it's by far the best engine that is available under a GM hood. It probably would get better mileage than the 6.0 gasser as well. I know the first 3/4 ton pickup I will buy will be a diesel, and it will most likely be a Ford. (The new powerstroke G2 will be out this fall.....drooool) Just my two cents though.

(I'm not trying to start a brand war, I'm just giving my own input)

Trucker,

Just a correction or two for you here. Diesels in trucks are capable of getting higher than 14 mpg. Some people with Ford SuperDuty diesels right now report over 18 mpg, and the new engines coming out are more efficient than the past ones. Also, it's usually about 5,000 extra to get a diesel in a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup. I don't know where you get 10,000 from. Diesel technology is catching up with gas technology, and they always seem to last longer. In my opinion, diesel is far superior to gas technology.
