I have an LCX-27C/200KHz Skimmer and I like it just fine for my application, fishing Saginaw Bay in water 7-30' deep with few weeds. I expect yours will work fine out of the box, but a software upgrade may help if you fish in shallow, weedy areas.

Mine has software revision 2.3. Versions 2.4 and 2.4.2 beta are both available on the Lowrance site, but I have not loaded either of those versions into the LCX-27. Those versions are reported to improve performance in weedy water.

I too just purchased the X27 and was wondering if I was going to be able to use it "Out of the box" or needed to make upgrades. I haven't upgraded my electronics since 2002 so I'm kind of excited about the new stuff and a little apprehensive at the same time.

I purchased two x27,s last May. They are pretty straight forward and easy to use. The problems I have are losing bottom, locking up, especially in shallow weedy mucky bottoms. It looks like Lowrance may have these issues solved with the new 2.4.2 beta update. I am waiting for that update to become final and then will down load it. The units are awesome when working correctly.

Linda Colt for Lowrance suggested the following to me on 11-19-08:
"I would highly recommend you download the software and be SURE you re-set to shallow water mode, and adjust your color to %70 and the ping speed to %50".

See, that's what worries me! Locking up, losing bottom...that shouldn't happen! Thanks for the information from Linda at Lowrance. I will try to use that when I get my rig ready to go in the spring again.

that's the part that concerns me also. we spend a good amount of money on electronics and can't even use them until we upgrade. sounds like lowrance just developes this stuff and figures if it works part of the time great and if not then oh well. looking forward, to next spring, should i upgrade yet this year, the boat is already winterized, or should i upgrade next year right before i use it

If you not going to use it till spring, wait and get the final fix which probably will be the 2.4.2 . It is not a big deal to update. I take my to my dealer because they can do it with faster internet than I have. It took about 10 minutes total for both my units when I updated in June 08.
