View Full Version : Manual start for elect start T8?

I have the Yammie T8 kicker with electric start, had the battery go dead on my boat and the F150 wouldn't start, figured I could pull start the T8 and pulled the cover...no manual starter I can see.

Anybody know if they made a adaptor or kit to use a rope also on this motor??

My 04 T-8 came with a rope and handle assembly and a socket and bar for the plugs.

The flywheel is under a shroud so you need a 10mm socket to remove 3 bolts to get to the flywheel knotches to use the pull start rope.

You may want to keep a 10mm socket and ratchet and pull rope on board just in case.

Don't ask how I know.

Thanks MikeF, I won't ask either....:)

Wouldn't supprise me somewhere in the bag of stuff I got when I bought the boat there might be the same stuff you got, prob figured I'd not need it as it's to new...uh huh..

I'll pick up a socket and rope and add that to the tool kit I forgot to put in the boat.

fwiw if I ever buy another boat, it will have a three bank charger and not the 2 bank model...trying to save a buck..duh! :badidea:

Thanks much.

Al,

I have learned to avoid dead starting batteries, the hard way..

I have set up 2 series 27 starting/deep cycle batteries in parallel, and put a seperate onboard charger on them. I just plug both chargers in and all 4 of my batteries get charged. If you have a bunch of electronics in your boat, you will appreciate all the battery you have with this set-up. I run 6 units (sonar and GPS) and fishing at night I have a lot of interior rope lights, and other interior lighting. I also run a pretty hefty stereo system with XM............So as you see I pull a lot of juice most of the time, but this set-up has held its oun and I have plenty reserve.

I ran a pair of wires from one of the three front trolling batts to the start batt.

I have 2 switch disconnects, one mounted up front and one in the back.

If I need the power I can throw the 2 switches and the batts are in parallel.

With the 2 switches arranged this way the power lines between the batts that run the lenth of the baot are dead unless I need them.

Since I did this modification I have not had the need to use it but am ready for the next time.

The reason I had a dead battery was the battery had a bad cell and was only six months old.
They replacedit without a problem.
The charger would show full charge but the battery power would quickly drop under load.

I have run a seperate fuse panel off one of the other trolling batts for night lights and down rigger power and seperate power plug sockets.
All the lights are LED and found LED replacement bulbs for the stock lights.

How big of a boat do you run to need 6 units?
Just curious.

I have an 18 foot Lund, but have units in front, midship, and rear so I can move around, and so my clients can have the benefits of knowing what I know....Not only that, but I am an electronics nut...looking to add another unit for the helm, not sure I can get another one to fit...

I'm thinking if I had remembered to charge the main battery and if I had remembered you can manually start the T8 all this would not be a concern, but having two batteries may make sense, I'll check for room and see how it goes, while I do no night fishing yet, I can see it happening and running out of battery could be a pain..

Thanks tbomm, we still need to get out..:)
Always pool 4 during the week maybe

Running wire from the front to the back would be not my first choice, but I did have that on the old boat, it was a lot more open and easier to run wire, but its a thought, thanks.

A $15 set of jumper cables is a great piece of insurance. Don't take up much room and will pay for themselves at some point in time. For that once every year or two you have battery issues or come upon another stranded boater, pick up a set at WalMart. With 3 -4 batteries onboard, you should have enough juice somewhere to jump back to the dead battery.

just get one of those portable jump boxes designed for jumping a dead car battery.

they work great

The rope for the T-8 is probably in that plastic bag with the owner's manual...usually in the glove box, Allen.

LOL> You aren't the only one ... I averaged about 1.5 customers a week who never looked at the bag after we hauled out everything, explained it and then handed it to them :)

Ya, but its really embarrassing for a old motor head like me....
Besides this was just the last trip for the year, and nothing ever goes wrong then..hehe

T Mac or ?, will the T8 start if the battery is dead using a pull rope?
Also I'm under the understanding that the T-8 has a generator/alternator and will slowly charge the battery back up??

Thanks all for the info.

Yes, it will start with a dead battery, and Yes, it will charge the battery once running.

The only way they could improve the t-8 would be to add a pull start. Happened to me and I just brought up a trolling motor battery to get things going and switched them out once running. Cables, as suggested above, would be easier.

I will find a pair of cables long enough to reach both batteries, been a learning experience for me...and humbling..

Thanks again, all

Yes on both.
But as soon as the T-8 has run enough to get you enough juice back in your start battery...start the big motor...it'll charge you up much faster.
This kinda stuff happens to guys fishing remote places (like Ft. Peck) alot.
