Does anyone have any experience with this unit? Has the external gps puck given good reception? Thanks for any input.

I've had the 917c for 2 seasons now and I love it. Very easy to use and read. I don't think I've ever lost a GPS signal. I have the unit and the puck mounted on a ram mount on the dash. I've never had any issues with it at all and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I too have this unit but I have it mounted on the bow interlinked to the side imageing unit on the console. Very dependable, easy to read and the interlink to the console unit makes the unit much more valuable as I can mark spots driving around and have them show up on the bow GPS to aid in finding spot on the spot.

TAW.....Your setup is what I am leaning towards on my boat. Have the si unit (797) on the dash and like the size of the 917 for the bow, and easier viewing from the back/console. Did you find a better price than a grand on this unit ?

I'm going to do the same thing: 797c2 in dash, 788c on bow, connected with interlink. My dilemna is, where do you mount the antenae? If you mount it over the transducer in the back, it'll be off by the length of the boat from the bow. So I'm thinking mid boat. It'll never be right on, but will be the best compromise for exact spot? right?

I have the 917c on the bow hooked to my US2, and interlinked to a 997SI on the console. Like the unit.

Mid-boat is a good way to go if you're trying to get an average position for your transducer, console and bow units. However, there's always going to be some position error in your signal, so I wouldn't sweat a few feet in the mounting location too much.

For my boat I have my gps puck very close to my transducer and prefer that - when I'm looking at my console units or my kicker unit they should be right on, and if I'm in the bow I may be off by a few feet but I can live with it. That seems to me to be the best way to go.

Hope that helps and good luck.

I have a 797 with the external puck, and have never lost a signal. Acquisition is very fast as well. i mounted mine on my back corner plate; the spot was convenient, out of the way, unobstructed, and about as close to my transducer as it could possibly be. I only have one finder and one transducer, so i want the gps ant. as close as possible to that transducer, so the waypoints i mark are as close as possible to what I'm seeing on the graph. See pic:
