Good reel for the money. I have used them for my clients, they seem to hold up well, and have a decent drag.

They were nice reels but they haven't been made in about 13 years or so.

I have two of these reels, and several TP 5600's, that I use for striper fishing. Parts are readily available for these reels, and parts interchange with other Ambassadeur reels, including bearings, levelwinds, pawls drag washers (parts that commonly wear out). The spool of the 5600 has the "super free" feature, in which the spools spins on the shaft, and the shaft doesn't spin. The thing to watch for on the BM 5600's is too much oil and grease. They are very easy to clean if you buy one that is caked in grease and oil. I would recommend any of the 5600 series.

NOT TRUE!! You can buy them all day long at Wal-Mart @ $52 and change or you can get the Black Max Silver Series for $62 and change. These reels are still made, but only for stores like Wal-Mart. (just saw them today at two different stores)

Excellent reels for the money!! I do still have four of the older original Black Max's (left hand) and use them for clients that prefer a left hand reel for striper & hybrid striper fishing. They hold up very well and have an excellent drag system.

Don't know if you are referring to the older models, or the ones that are still available, but for the money they are a pretty decent reel and will stand up to a lot of abuse!!

Hawker, wrong! The Black Max 5600 was discontinued quite a few years ago. Abu still makes a reel they call the Black Max but it is a low profile bass sized reel. the 5600 is a 5000 sized reel. Abu has used the Black Max and the whole "Max" name over and over through out the years but the 5600 size is not made today.
