I think this topic has been discussed before but I can't seem to find the post. So I will ask it again what are some other options for mounting GPS Combo to your boat besides the ram mounts? I have heard that the ram mounts tend to wear out over time and the ball doesn't always stay where you set it. What are other mounts that work for the Lowrance 520c??

A company called Johney Ray makes mounts and Scotty makes a sonar mount as well. I still think Ram are the toughest mounts out there though. If you are not sure about the ball mounts go with the Ram swing arm mounts, very tough.

Johnny Ray are bullet proof.
The only issue is that they don't have an over hang as is the case with the Ram mount. The Ram mount works very well for those consoles which are tight on space.

However, the Johnny ray mounts flat, and is trouble free and doesn't let the electronics shift.

I am looking for a mount similiar to the ram the has the free range of motion but can hold up better when you tighten it down when you are moving from spot to spot. Someone had talked about another brand similiar to the ram but was not all plastic. That is what I am trying to find.

There is a pic of an all metal 'VersaTrue' in my album.

I don't believe the VersaTrue mounts are being manufactured anymore, but there still may be few around around for sale. RAM sued them and they settled it out of court.

Personally, I've always had great results with RAM mounts.

Gamber-Johnson Admits that VersaTrue Products Infringe NPI Patent: Court Orders Gamber-Johnson to Discontinue Sales

October 2006

SEATTLE, WA, October 4, 2006 — National Products, Inc. announced that a federal court yesterday ordered Gamber-Johnson, LLC to cease and desist from selling its VersaTrue line of mounting products. The order came as part of a settlement of a patent infringement lawsuit brought by NPI. Gamber-Johnson cannot appeal the order.

NPI is the manufacturer of the popular and innovative RAM Mount line of mounting devices. It is based in Seattle, where it was founded in a garage and has since grown into a successful company.
RAM Mount products can be configured to hold any number of devices, ranging from GPS units to notebook computers, in many different environments including vehicles. They use an innovative ball-and-socket mechanism that provides a study grip while allowing for easy repositioning of the devices. They are particularly popular with sportsmen, mobile professionals, fleet vehicles and the military.

Gamber-Johnson is located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and also sells vehicle mounting products.
NPI filed the patent infringement lawsuit in December 2004 against Gamber-Johnson after Gamber-Johnson launched a line of products, called VersaTrue, that were close copies of NPI’s RAM Mount products. NPI also alleged that Gamber-Johnson infringed NPI’s trade dress rights by copying the distinctive curved, hourglass shape of genuine RAM Mount products.

The Court’s order came as part of a settlement between the parties. Rather than going to trial, Gamber-Johnson admitted that its products infringed NPI’s patent and trade dress rights.

The Court ordered Gamber-Johnson to immediately stop advertising the infringing VersaTrue products. Gamber-Johnson must discontinue all sales of the infringing VersaTrue products by the end of 2006.
Gamber agreed to waive any appeal. The financial terms of the settlement are confidential.

According to Jeff Carnevali, the founder and president of NPI, “Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it just wasn’t right for Gamber-Johnson to copy our patented RAM Mount products. We had to protect our patent and trade dress rights. This settlement is a great result and gives us exactly what we wanted. We can now move forward, keeping our focus on serving our customers and continuing to develop great new products.”

NPI was represented in this lawsuit by the law firm of Darby & Darby P.C. Lead attorney on the case, David K. Tellekson, said that “this was a case of blatant copying by Gamber-Johnson. Gamber-Johnson knew that nothing works better than a RAM Mount, so they simply copied the unique RAM design. We had a very strong case, and we were looking forward to putting these facts in front of a fair and impartial jury. However, this settlement is a tremendous victory for NPI and one of Seattle’s best inventors.
NPI currently has twelve patents and has many more applications pending. “NPI’s RAM Mount products are popular here and all over the world, and are even being sold to China. NPI’s patents are an important tool for protecting its inventions from being copied,” said Tellekson.
