I had put a new water pump in this used motor I just bought. I put it on the muffs to run it. Not much water comes out the hole till it gets warm a bit then the water starts to flow better but not with any pressure like my 50hp I had. It says in the book that it has a theromstat and it may have droplets to full spray. I took the lower unit off to check that I had the copper tube stuck in where is should be. That looks ok.
I see more water coming out the side of the case where there is a hole. That one sprays good and water will come out around the shift rod where it comes through the lower case and you can see it from the out side. Once I shut the engine off and the hose water drains from the motor for a bit.
If anyone has a 2 stoke merc that they run on the muffs let me know how yours is. Thanks

If water is escaping from wierd places, run it with the muffs without the cowling. Sounds like a leak somewhere under the cowling (broken hose?).

My 2003 9.9 2S is the same way, not much more than a dribble out of the tell-tale hose. I took the t-stat cover off, and the pee-hose flow area has just a small "notch" where the t-stat fits, so it really dosesn't see much flow & pressure until the thermostat opens. I replaced the thermostat & impeller, with no change. Remove the thermostat completely, lots of flow out of the pee-hose.
Not sure what to make of it.

Do you ever run yours with the muffs on it? I was wondering if the water from the side hole is normal. Also do you get a hard stream of water or just a light running of the water? Thanks for the help

My 9.9 has the water intake on the bottom side of the cavitation plate, rather than "nostrils" on the sides. So, I can't use a set of muffs like you probably can. As a result, I just run it in a container full of water, so any side hole flow is not visible.
Sorry, HRG

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking that maybe I'm ok. With a thermostate in it the pump would half to have a place to dump the extra water being pumped. Also the hose being on turned on it was probally to much water being forced in. Just a thought.

I think your motor is fine. I have a 1996 merc 9.9 that i use as a kicker on my rig and when i first start it up when its cold very little water comes out. when i use it for back trolling the amount of watter that comes out varies a lot do to the thermostat opening and closing. When i use it to forward troll the thermostat stays open so a lot of water comes out. I have had this motor on my 17 foot boat for 12 years and it works the same to day as it did 12 years ago.
