I've heard you can find out a Walleyes age by analizing one of its scales. Anyone know anything about this?

Yes, that can be done, to a certain extent. Just hold up a scale to the sun and you will see rings, similar to how a tree has annual rings. Up to about 7 or 8 years...I think....this works, then it gets tougher. Walleyes have been known to live 20- 25 years but most likely will reach the end by 10 to 15 years old.

Hey Steve,

When I saw the "like rings on a tree" in your answer I was expecting to see an "lol" at the end...but it wasn't there. I assume you are serious then and thank you. I guess you learn something new everyday.

you can also judge the age by the length somewhat.

the average lake in MN will produce a 14" walleye after four years.

A lot of the length depends on the area of the lake, and weather the fish is a female or a male too. the female is usually a lot bigger than the male. 99% of the time. the rings do tell the age, and if looked at under a microscope, you can see the rapid growth years, the wider gap between the rings. good luck and good fishin.
