I'm assuming you're refering to a fixed mount GPS unit. It depends on where you mount the unit and how you intend to use it. In either scenario the antenna needs a clear "view" of the sky. Internal antenna models do not work well in an enclosed cabin (hardtop), and you can't flush mount them. With a clear view of the sky they work as well as an external antenna model. They are also a good choice if you plan on using the unit on more than one boat or for ice-fishing.
External antenna models offer the most flexibility in mounting for both the unit and the antenna. They also have the most flexibilty as far as networking with other displays via a NEMA 2000 network, as an external antenna is usually required for networking to multiple displays, i.e. bow & console units sharing the same antenna.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Appreciate it.

The internals I own 2 must stay in upright stance. If you tilt the Screen back more than 10 degrees it will cause signal loss as per manufacture. 10 degrees is not much. I will be adding the external antenna to overcome this

The new Lowrance units all come with internal antennas and they say they work way better than the old one units. As was said earlier, they didn't work so well.
Also, being you're asking about performance.. Both Humminbird and Lowrance now have 16 channel antennas that "look up" 5x per second now, they are crazy accurate. You know how when you left your gps on tied to the dock you'd get that cloverleaf effect? Now you get one dot. They don't come standard at least with Lowrance though. The Lowrance is an LGC 4000, and will work on 2006 and newer product (may need an adapter cable for your nema system if you have blue connectors) and doesn’t come with any of their new product. The new stuff all has internal antennas (12 channel) and the external (16 channel) is optional. The Humminbird is the GR16 and plugs right in to any existing (12 channel) unit and their entire line comes standard with 16 channel antennas.

According to the Lowrance site, the new HDS series units are 16-channel GPS with internal or external antenna. The older LCX series are 12-channel on internal or external antennas.

When Lowrance did our training they said otherwise. They said that people would want the external to get better accuracy. I can't imagine them getting that wrong. I was in two long meetings about it. Then again...
