Just looking for Opinions on the St. Croix Avid 6'3" Med light Extra fast rod. I have been fishing 6'6" ML fast action rods and am wondering if the extra fast would be a little better for jigs? I just got a 6'8" Avid medium extra fast and think it will be good for spoons and blades, but want a "tweener" if you will.
Thanks,
Todd

I have one of those~~ 6'-3", Med light extra fast..
Not a bad rod for the money.
No complaints, here.
Not my #1 favorite jigging rod...yet it does get used fairly often.

Everybody has different likes.
.... I like jigging with my Loomis SJR782s better ...in most instances. (I like the action better...and the length)

I like the touch of shorter rods for jigging. This is a great blank! I made a few jigging rods out of this blank, but cut them down to 5" 10' and have nothing but praise for the rods.

Thanks,

I have one that I use for pitching smaller 3/32 - 1/4oz jigs when fishing the wingdams and riprap on the Mississippi River. It is about my 3rd go-to rod, after two of my REW customs. Nice rod works well for light stuff.

Thanks for the info guys... Still not real sure what to do might just opt for a 6 foot medium/fast Avid too... Any thoughts there? I hate not getting to fish any of these rods before tying one up for 170 bucks!

I've got to say the Avid 6'3"MLXF has Been my best producer. I've tried the head games w/ switching different rods between left and right hands. I just seem to have a better feel w/ that rod. I also have a 6'8"MXF and it doesn't come close to the MLXF for sensitivity w/ lighter jigs(up to 1/2oz in current). I also have a 6'3" LE MXF and it to is not as sensitive (not as soft of a tip and seems to get into the stiff backbone faster). I use a blue 6'9"MLXF when 2 fisted jiggin but can't wait for the ice to go to try out the 5'9" MLXF I bought for $100 at a Gander Close out!! I haven't tried other high end rods to compare but in the St Croix brand That 6'3" is the best for me .....so far.

I looked all over at all the high end rods. I decided on the ML 6'3" xf
I bought it at thestart of the y ear and fished a week in cAnada with it.

Very happy. I'm glad I went with the ML vs. M.
I was about to buy the legend tournament one. a littler stiffer
I use fireline & i can feel pretty good. I'm a "concrete hand" when it comes to jigging.
Some have the touch, I'm definately not a natural.

I was at the Madison fishing show when I bought it.
I tend to agree with a previous post of a shorter rod. My favorite rod before this was a "Berkley" Gary Roach ML 5'9" rod....
I liked it, but wondered if the step up to a full premium is worth it.
The feel is definately better, the 6'3" vs 5" 9" has taken me some getting used to...
I never would have thought 6 inches takes some getting used too...
I'll tell you in another year how I really like.
I think rods are like golf clubs. it takes 2 years to break them in soe they feel natural.

PS: I caught 150 small mouth with a jig & twister tail dueing the Canada week.
I guess it fishes pretty good.

I am presently building one with a 6" butt extension (6`-9") and so far like what I have done. I like
longer jigging rods as I have a high bow on my boat. I presently have 2 older 63MXF`s extended
out to 6`- 9' and am very happy with them. I use 8 guides and the tip to weight the tip a bit extra
and soften it a bit. They are great for my jigging purposes and and double duty for pitching and dragging.
I think the MLXF is going to fit in nicely for spring jigging and pitching.
Also extending out a new 63MXF but the jury is still out on that one yet.

I have the 6'3" rod you are talking about, and I love it for pitching lighter jigs. I can feel 1/8 and 1/16 oz jigs with this rod. I use six pound Vanish. I would think if you go with heavier and/or stiffer lines you might lose some of the feel. It is my go to rod when using the lighter jigs.

I built a 6'3" and 5'9" MXF with the Avid blanks. I use them jigging in faster current while fishing the Mississippi river. I like both of these rods. For lighter conditions, I use the 2 legend 6' MLF blanks I built. You can't go wrong with the St Croix Rods.

I've fished with the AS59MXF, the AS63MLXF, the AS69MLXF and the AS63MXF over the course of several years. These are all fine tapers for jiggin. My favorite vertical rod is the AS63MXF-a little more backbone. I use the medium light xtra fasts for lighter pitchin, casting, draggin jigs. Between the 6'9" and the 6'3" medium light extra fasts, I actually prefer the 6"9" a little more just because of the leverage and casting advantages. These are all excellant choices for a hard working jig rod and most of the preferences will be weighted by the type of fishing, presentation factors, and size of the user, user's fishing environment. Good choice with the Avid series and good luck with whichever rod you decide is best for you.
