I have 6 of these reels for trolling. Line capacity is listed as 450 yards of 12# test. I prefer to run 10# line. The question I have is do any of you use cheap line for a backer then tie on your favorite line or do you put your favorite line on the entire spool? I ask this because I prefer the Berkley Trilene Premium Strength in Photochromic color but I cant find it anywhere in a spool larger than 275 yards. These reels should hold about 450-475 yards of 10#. I use to buy the 2000 yard spool and put it on myself with my Cyclone spool station. Putting your favorite premium line on seems wasteful and gets expensive.

Maybe some of you can let me know what you do. Also let me know if Berkley still makes the 2000 yard spool and where I can get it. There web site doesnt list it either.

Thanks
Jon

You can use cheaper priced line for a backer.I've done it for FIRELINE no problems.

You can use any large diameter mono for backing. there have bben a lot of time i will put on some backing so i dont use as much line to fill a reel all the way with the premium line. just put as much of the line on a reel as you want to fish with, then put some of the larger backing on and fill the reel the rest of the way. check the amount of line as you do both, then rewind on a empty reel, check the footage as you put it on, and then you know how much of each line to do the rest of the reels that you have. also, a reminder, write it down so you can do it at another time. good luck and good fishin.

Search the archives. There was a thread last fall about backing with 20# and filling the spool with fireline and other premium lines.

I always put some backing on these reels. If you would fill it completely with your line of choice every time you respooled it would cost you a fortune. I use some heavy cheap line for backing.
