I see various posts where people are discussing which fishfinders to put in the back and which in the front. When does one need two fishfinders? I mostly troll Lake Erie. Would one benefit from another fishfinder on Erie?

Most of the guys who have 2 fish finders work break lines, & edges of structure. They need 2 because they need to know whats under the front of the boat, and whats under the back. The only need for 2 on Erie would be in case one goes down. Or if you wanted different cone angles or frequencies.

They are mostly needed if you work the front and back of your boat. When working the front on structure with a bow mount trolling motor it's helpful to know what's below you. Also the same goes for when you're in the back. Other people, like me, keep two on the boat out of general principle. I like having backup systems on my boat. I have an 824 AP on the bow that I can troll with if the kicker ever decides to take a dive. I also use it at night and when going below 1 mph. I have two VHF radios, fish finders, and etc. I have a basic unit and keep the origianl when I upgrade. I rarely fish from the front of my boat but, I keep my original LCD finder on it anyway.

2 locaters give you 2 fishing "stations".
By having one up front with the transducer working (usually) off the electric bow mount, and another back at the helm, you don't have to keep moving a locater back and forth.
