Bob - I caught your show over the weekend and it looks like there will be lots of good action in the coming weeks. I am primarily a walleye angler and am wondering what your favorite MN walleye fishing spot is and when the best time to be there is? I would welcome input from other anglers as well.

Thanks

Mark

Minnesota has lots of outstanding walleye fisheries, and as best I can remember, they all have one thing in common. Here are my favorites, see if you can figure out what the common denominator is.

Rainy Lake--Wilderness feel if you want to run a bit, great fishing close to town. Very diverse fishery.

Upper Red Lake---Great walleyes, bonus crappies and trophy pike

Winnie---Outstanding walleyes---Opener to late June is really good

Mille Lacs-----Very good walleyes----World class smallmouth

Kabetogama----Great walleyes----Wilderness lake that's easy to get to

I've probably forgotten some lake, but these are favorites.

Just for a variety, Green Bay in Wisconsin, also a couple of small lakes near Land O' Lakes Wisconsin

Clear Lake in Iowa.

Lots of the smaller lakes in NE SoDak

Good question---Thanks.

Mark - Bob offered up some great suggestions. One body of water that probably doesn't get discussed as much is Otter tail Lake here in western Minnesota. Otter tail is a diverse fishery with lots of structure that has shallow fish, mid-depth fish and very deep fish as well. Because of its diversity, Otter tail's walleyes can be caught lots of ways: traditional live bait rigs and jigs, bottom bouncers, crankbaits, slip bobbers, etc. Best bite is often in the spring or late fall, though mid-summer can offer a good deep bite as well.

How about some of you other walleye guys out there, what are your thoughts??

A couple of my favorites are Lake Pepin and Lake of the Woods. Big Stone Lake and Leech Lake are 2 others you need to try. Lots of walleye opportunities out there.
