My favorite is the St. Croix Avid MXF in 6'3" in. It is a medium power and extra fast action. It's not too long and not too short. I also use a 5'9" version of the Avid for jigging.

Ditto the Avid 6'3" medium xtra fast, close 2nd is the 6'9" medium light xtra fast. The Legend series is also very nice in the same tapers but for a daily working rod, I really like the Avids.

I have two--the Avid 6'3" MXF, and a Cabela's XMLti in the same length with the same action. I think the Cabela's rod is a couple of ounces lighter because of the titanium guides vs the ceramic guides on the Avid. Both are excellent with lighter 1/8 and 1/16 oz jigs, which is mostly what I use.

How do you like the recoil guides??

I have come acroos people who wont fish anything but them, but also people who have had issues with grooving after extended use. Any issues with them?

While I use both a St. Croix TWS66MLF and a St. Croix PS60MLF for jigging walleye, I prefer using the PS60MLF (probably because I developed a preference for the 6 foot jigging rod). While I'd love to compare these rods to rods from other manufacturers, cost prohibits that activity.

Shikari SHX PSJ661.

Now that Shikari has closed and that blank is no longer available... G. Loomis GLX SJ721 extended to 6'6".

The first set of Recoils I used on a custom rod were grooved within 6 months. I won't use them again.

Here are a couple photos of a Recoil after 2 seasons of Wisconsin bass fishing...

Here's a listing of some various guide ring materials and their hardness. The Recoils are right in the same neighborhood as chrome...

Stainless Steel (SS): 400
Chrome: 800-1000
Carbaloy: 1000
Aluminum Oxide: 1200-1400
Alconite : 1300-1500
NanoLite : 1800
Zirconia: 1000-1400
Zirconia PVD: 1600
SiC: 2200-2400

I'll second the G. Loomis SJ721, only mine is extended to 6'3". Matched to a 1000 Stradic this thing is the bomb.

I've got a custom built SC5 on its way. For the price, a Fenwick Eagle GT is a decent rod.

I built two of these rods and they are my favorite! Also my 6' MLF Legend is a close 2nd.

Berkley Lightning Rod, 6' med action w/Abu-Garcia Cardinal Reel. Used to be a G-Loomis but it didn't catch me any more fish than the Lightning Rod so I went back to it. I don't worry about it getting beat up or stepped on and it works good for me. Now I use the G-Loomis for fishing tubes for smallmouths in the river.

I don't think the Jason Mitchell spinning rods can be beat for the price. Medium action and they are very comparable to the higher dollar Loomis rods in wieght and sensititivity. Supposedly they use a thin, higher dollar graphite material wrapped several times and the graphite runs down into the handle so that even the slightest bump can be felt. They also try to keep the fiberglass resin down which really can hurt sensitivty but is used to increase durability. Most rod manufacturers use a lot of resin to increase the durability at the expense of the weight and sensitivity. The Jason Mitchell rods use resin strategically to keep the sensitivity high while maintaining decent durability. Walleye Central has a promotion on them where you can try them pretty much risk free for 90 days without being billed. Check one out for yourself. You'll see what I mean.

I third the sj721.

I "fourth" the SJ721. Mine is a GLX extended to 6'3" and paired with a Shimano Twinpower 2000. The sensitivity in this rod is astounding.

Medium action. Extremely light. Highly sensitive. Similar to higher dollar Loomis. Great value in my opinion.

Sorry loomis fans but IMHO for 1/8 to 1/2 oz. the IMX SJR 722 beats the 721 hands down. In fact, the pair have left some nice avid's up for dust collection in my garage!

Teamed with a 1000 Symetre...

OH! I want soft water!!!

My son will out jig me with the same rods. :banghead:

st. croix tournament legend 6'-3" m ex-fast for me
had rew from this site do a build for me with this blank
it included blue holographic guides
and a blue texaluminum tennesee handle
it is lighter and looks far better looking than the over the counter with the huge silver guides
this handle setup really telegraphs bites right to the hand......
