Do you think I will be able to go slow enough with my 90hp 2 stroke Merc to troll with planer boards? Will I foul the plugs? Would like to wait a while before getting a kicker.
Thanks, this is a cool web site!

Assuming your boat is around 17-18 ft. long, the 90 2 stroke Merc will get down around 2.2.(calm water) You can idle the engine at 450 rpms with 93 octane gas, without too much fouling problems. If you need to go slower, either trim the engine up so the water intake is still in the water, or like I do, drag a five gallon bucket along side (two sometimes), to slow down. The other alternative, if you need to go spinner speed, which is 1- 1.2, and not use a kicker, is a trolling plate. They work great for open water trolling.
you gotta love those black outboards!

Just got off the phone with Ron Seelhoff. He has trolled this 90 2 stroke Merc enroute to winning the PWT championship several times. I asked, "how do you determine your speed/crankbait?'. He answered.....
"Each has an optimum speed range. So hum varied tunes and keep time as you troll, (throttle), some days Mozart may produce; other days it's Country Joe and the Fish tempos."
If you know Ron....you would NOT doubt his strategy.
When I first met Ron in 1990, he asked, "what's a Lindy rig?"
And all he does is WIN, BABY. My best friend.....go figure.lol
