A slumping economy is being blamed for a decision to cancel a major fishing tournament that was bound for the Shoals.

Florence-Lauderdale Tourism officials announced today that a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament scheduled for May 14-17 on Pickwick lake has been canceled. The tournament would have brought about 100 of the top bass anglers in the world to the Shoals.
Debbie Wilson, director of Florence/Lauderdale Tourism, said BASS officials told her the organization is cutting three tournaments from its 2009 Bassmaster Elite Series tour. The tour was originally scheduled to have 11 tournaments, including stops in Guntersville, Decatur and the Shoals. Wilson said Bassmaster officials did not elaborate on which other tournaments are being cut from the tour.
Wilson said BASS officials said the economic downturn forced the cuts.
Wilson said the tourism organization is already negotiating with other tournament fishing organizations to bring competitions to the Shoals in place of the BASS event.
