Looking for a assortment of 90 degree jig hooks to make some DIY jigs out of, what I need is hooks with a longer shank than most of what I've seen out there.
The Gamakatsu I seen at Cabella's today seem a bit longer, but if I could find some even longer I'd be happier.
Anybody??

Prob 1/0 though 4/0, that should cover just about any size I make.
Thinking 5/8oz down to 1/4 oz jigs maybe

Try www.hagensfish.com (http://www.hagensfish.com). Order there catalog as they have actual size pictures of the different size of jig hooks. It looks to me that the Mustad "O'Shaughnessy" jig hook has the longest shank.

Thanks, real life size pictures will help a ton, I'd better make sure of what my molds need first, but the OShaughnessy hook has been mentioned from several, thanks.

How many of each size are you looking at buying? I may be able to get them for you. Also how long are you looking for the hooks to be? I can go through what I have on hand and see what brand comes close to what your looking for.

Maybe a 100 or 200 of each, I need to see what my molds are designed for, but the longer the shank the better.
Trying to hook fair sized minnows in the mouth, out the gill and though the upper back and the hook though the back I'd like back as far as possible.
The Hagen site has a picture catalog, but requires a Tax number to get, I have one...somewhere, still looking for it.
Hook size would be whatever works for 3/8ths oz to maybe 5/8th oz basic round head jigs, might even try 1/4oz too.
Smelting stuff is all packed away, but hoping to get to it soon.
Thanks.

edit..
Dug out the jigs and appears I have several types of hooks needed.
The four molds I have list at least these hooks to use.
Eagle Claw 570 or 575
Aberdeen RVB-5-34
32760 or 91750
630
And possibly LMRH 38-5...wondering if this isn't the mold number though.
And hook sizes run from 1/0 to 4/0

Al:
You don't need a tax number to get a catalog unless you have a retail outlet and sell made up spinners and such.
I would just call them at 1-800-541-4586 and order there catalog.
You might be surprised at there prices. If you are interested in buying anything from them don't let the minimum quantity scare you, you can buy ANY amount you just add 1 or 2 dollars to each item that doesn't meet the minimum quantity.
They explain this in the front of there catalog.

Thanks Dave I'll see what happens on the hooks, but would rather make them myself, better than watching TV till spring..:)
Walfshmn, I'll give them a call, thanks.

So far it does appear the Eagle Claw 630-635 90 degree OShaughnessy hooks have the longest shanks.
Unless someone knows of a longer shanked hook, I'll order some from Do-it and see how they work.
Thanks for the help.

Allen I worked on this years ago and I have modified a round and asprin head mold to accept the gama 90 deg Finesse jig hook its in 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0. I think those are the sizes. the two I bought were 2/0 and 3/0 and I use the larger for 3/8 up to 3/4, anyway the mold will need some dremel work to make the collar large enough to hold lead and I put a barb on it so I could squeeze it down with a pliers to use shiners all the way up on the collar. also where the wire grooves are I made slightly larger. And because the ninety degree eye is higher than the mold I made some space there also. Sharpest and largest minnow hook out there. Won some money on a tough Erie bite many years ago. I actally applied it to snap jigging in MN first with 3/16 and made the collar larger so its more in the 1/4oz weight . Best weight for snapping in the years I've been doing it. Gluck. Go to Cabelas.

If you are molding your own heads, don't worry about the hook fitting the mold.
Rather, get the hooks you want to use and then modify, as stated above, the mold to fit the hook. I find the easiest way to modify the mold is using a drill press and drill bit to change the hook eye location/size, then finish off with a file if the hook point is in an interference part of the mold. The aluminum mold will cut fast, and many options are possible with just a few minutes work.

Thanks guys, once I find the hook I'm going to use I can dremel the mold out no problem, its finding the longest shanked hook I can, once I do that I'll order enough hooks to make several years worth of jigs.
I just hate to change the mold and find a different/better hook..
I'll check the Gama Finesse hook out next time I hit cabella's, thanks.

I'd have to look, but I think those might be the hooks I used last time, I'm looking for a even longer shank.
Appears the OShaughnessy hooks have a even longer shank, but I'll have to get them side by side I think to make sure.
Thanks.

Thats the one you want, just remember the sizes are bass sizes not walleye sizes so for your situation the 3/0 and 4/0 are real, real long and will come up half way down the back, right by the dorsel. I know I had to modify all molds to use them because the eyes stood higher than normal, I purchase mine at Cabelas in there bait tank area on the wall just as you enter, I've got a couple hundred of the 2/0 and 3/0's and for redtails or shiners no problem, there not the normal U bend its parab curve. The eyes are small but stand high.

Gama's or OShaun???
Ya, got them on that small section to the left as you enter the bait room, I'm betting we talking about the same Gama hook, I think they were a bit tight in the mold if I remember right.
