On the lgc-3000 lowrance gps antennae, there is the quick mount or you can buy the optional mast to mount it on. What's the point of the mast? I'd be mounting it on a hardtop.....does the mast do anything for you?

If you're going to mount it on a hardtop with a clear view of the sky in all directions, you won't need a mast.

I use that to have the RamMount Screw on to have it in between the TM and GPS/Sonar unit so that its clear/sticking out. Like mentioned last post, if its clear, I don't think you need it.
Lots of guys run them on a mast mount just in front of the consoles. Some don't like to put the holes in the console with the quick mount.

keep it at least 3' away from any head unit and I think it would lock in under a lid and it would lock in. Like the rest of the guys said, if you're mounting on a hardtop, you can mount it anywhere (just away from where your head unit is) and it will be fine. They do make a handy quick mount, but in a hard top mount I wouldn't use it.
