What are your feelings on this motor...good, bad, or indifferent?

the 1 thing I don't like on these older Merc 2 strokes is where the shifter is located, port side back by the cowl. Just looks like a real stretch to reach, based on where most tiller drivers would be positioned. At 1 time, I was actually wondering about the possibility of mounting a control box on the gunnel, with just a shift cable, so that it would be easier to use.

I had a 98 on a 1775 lund. These motors have a slight torque issue when running half throttle pounding the waves. I found with a cobra plate on the back helped out alot. They do make a forward shift kit that you can put on, so you don't have to reach to the back. All in all a pretty good motor.

I had a 1999 Merc 90 HP tiller and it was a great motor. It had a lot of power for a 90. I got rid of it and got a 90 etec tiller and that was the biggest mistake I ever made.

I wouldn't have a problem getting another 90 Merc. I run into the guy that bought my old motor and he fishes 12 months out of the year on Pool 4 and it has been flawless for him.

My Dad has a 96 Merc 60, I know it is not the same engine, but I think that the Mercs from that era are really well built engines. Yeah you are not going to see the same fuel efficiencies as 4's of today, but the reliabilty factor is well worth it.
Depends on how well maintained it is though. Make sure you do a thorough look over. My dad is pretty meticulous with his.
