Has anyond tried to side-plane off of a rigger. I am thinking of trying to set a small minnie dipsey on a dead side plane (No. 3+ setting) with a lead off of the ball of 100-150 ft.

Jerry,
I'm not aware of anyone doing this, but I'm quite sure someone has. The size 000 Dipsy or the Big Jon Diving disks are both so small as to be of little effect at summer speeds, those drop lengths, or with any line suitable for Steelhead. All 3 of those together (speed, drop length, & line size) and I don't see how those minidisks could do anything.
But you may have the secret set-up that will just kill em this year!! That's the fun of walleye fishing. Good luck. I'm sure not trying to talk you out of trying it. Just stating my opinion.

I don't run riggers for walleyes, but one year I tried to run small dipseys off the riggers for salmon. Two of the biggest problems I encountered were having the small dipsey interfere with the wire dipseys I was running off the same side, and having to set the dipsey and the rigger release very tight because I have very fast riggers (Vectors). You must run this mini dipsey setup on an outdown (outside rigger) because your dipsey on an inside rigger will track so far outside, that it will interfere with your outdowns and your inside big dipseys. Make sense so far? Even on the outdowns, I didn't run more than a 20' lead and that small dipsey found my wire dipsey on more than one occasion. Yes, the idea has merit if you are only running a couple lines, but sometimes you can overcomplicate things.
Remember KISS.
I think Frank is talking about size 0 Dipsys were I was talking about the 000 Dipsy.
Jerry I have run the small Big Jons off my riggers, to get spoons well below my cannon balls, with some success. never tried anything to the side. It seems to me that you could reach the same water using wire off planner boards with alot less headaches. Ray Bluegoose

Heres another ideal. Try a snap weight to get your bait below the ball.

I used to run spoons behind mini-dipseys off of downriggers back when walleye fishing was good off of the Central Basin port of Erieau. There were days when that rig took most of the fish, and other days when it wasn't worth the hassle. It's another tool to add to your bag of tricks.

Sounds like some good advice. I own them, but do not want to run boards as I have never had a need to. You may think this is not true, but I will out fish 90% of my charter friends by using dipseys, riggers and working the boat properly - IN DEEP WATER. I have done this for 20 years and it works for me under any conditions. I think boards are an added work station that I do not need. But, I will only run six lines max and am meticulously monitoring my depth, speed and presentation. There are directional divers that replace the ball - sold on ebay but I have not heard of there abilith to perform. I hope that we will come up with a method to run off the ball. Depth is not an issue, I want to go off the ball depth and shoot out to the side. This wilol give me a better spread for Erie and Ontario.

Jerry,
I also prefer not to use the boards. My dipsies produce but I'm not getting the production out of the riggers that I think they should be capable of. Sounds like you have it figured out. Perhaps you can give us an idea of how you use them for walleye.
What kind of leads off the ball. what lures, what depths and speed. Do you use stackers or sliders? Any help would be appreciated. I'm generally fishing Erie's central basin Depths of 70-74 ft.

Jerry,
Not being a smart alec or anything, but would you consider just posting it here. That way if someone only checks in here once a week (not me for sure..lol) they too can utilize your expertise....just wondering. Thanks.
