What seems to be the rod holder of choice for use with Dipseys? Helping a buddy rig his boat and all I have ever used has been FISH-ON and have never had a problem with them. He would like to use RAM if they are stong enough. Thanks ( Posted earlier on wrong board ----Sorry ) Coach

I use Scotty's or Cabella's 360's (same thing)
They hold up to dipsys and downrigger rods just fine. Even a big steelhead from time to time! Havent had a muskie try to rip one off yet, but Im waiting...

Coach after loosing a couple of outfits due to broken plastic/fiber rod holders I switched to all metal holders. I personally use perco flush mounts and Berts track mounts but there are several makes on the market. Just make sure they are strong enough to tear the side off the boat or break the rod handle.

The one thing I have found over the years is (I) like rod holders that keep the Rod Butt outside of the boat, so as your not able to bang into them as your moving about. There are many good ones out there. My favorite may be Berts Custom Tackle. He has a new design this year. It looks better, works better and is cheaper than before, Don't hear that very often!

Howdy Coach
I have used the Fish-On holders & can say for plastic, they would be the top choice. I did a lot of trolling for muskies with them. I have never used them with Dipsey Divers though. I sold them with my old boat. The next boat I tried Cabelas 360 with Dipseys. I went through 2 sets of 4 of these. I was very fortunate I was watching when a whole rig about left the boat. Not a good choice for Dipseys. While I am commenting, Cabelas 360 & Fish-On holders are in NO way the same. Fish-On holders are made of a completely different material. Ok, next boat. I rigged my new boat with both the Original RAM holders & the RAM tubes. Never a problem. RAM is a decent choice for pulling Dipseys.

Airwave:
Where do you find information about Bert's tackle? The web sites is not very good (or up-to-date).
Thanks.

Coach, Like Dean posted earlier, Bert's are very good perhaps one of the best. I personally use tite-lok rod holders. You can purchase them in the track system like bert's, individual, or the three holders on one mount. These are all aluminum tubes with stainless hardware. I troll using dipsies, jets, boards and never had a problem with these rod holders, good value for the money. Good luck

Bert's Custom Tackle is still in business but they have been bought out by Pursuit Sports. The old "Bert's" page is here: www2.kettering.edu/~mich9657/berts1.html
The new "Pursuit Sports" page is here:
www.pursuitsports.com
As someone mentioned above, don't ignore Tite-Lok rod holders. They are comparable to the Big Jons and Berts at sometimes half the price.
www.captgarys.com has the best deals I have seen on the Tite-Loks. His site is difficult to navigate, but you can get a catalog in two or three days with the biggest selections of Tite-Lok products I have ever seen at www.captgarys.com/info/index.html
Good luck!

Thanks Pat.
I am quite sure that I am going with Capt. Gary's Tite Lok, but I at least would like to look over Bert's stuff.

Rick,
I talked with Captain Gary's last week and your were right, he seems like a real decent guy and took the time to answer all my questions on his dime. I asked about possible sale prices and he said the tite-Loks don't have sales, however I could send him my wish list and he would get a me a better deal. I looked around quite a bit and called every Tite-Lok retailer in Wisconsin and Captain Gary's beat them all.
It does look as though I will go with the 30" tracks so I can get a better spread. I did get that triple rod mount and although it was in mint shape, I'm thinking I would prefer a wider spread off my gunnels. I'll be making the purchase sometime before next week for sure and will let you know what I end up doing.

Bert did not like the way things were going with Pursuit so he got his company back. Thats why there is a new holder out. And it's even better

Coach,
You've got some good advice so far. Here's my 2 cents. While I know plenty of people have run Big Dipseys with the plastic holders (including me back when Dad still bought most of the tackle), but I prefer to do my gambling in Vegas rather than with my equipment. Airwave mentioned the other thing that used to drive me nuts with the plastic style - the rod buts on the ones we used were in the boat and were sure to bang your knees. My suggestions:
Vector makes a great set of rodholders from single up to five a side. Adjust and lock both vertically and horizontally. www.vectorsport.com I believe.
I'd like to see the new Bert's that are mentioned.
Big Jon's or Tite Loks.
Other thing that hasn't been mentioned is IF the boat has a railing around the back, the clamp on tube style holders are hard to beat. Very versatile in the range of positions both vertical and horizontal. Lee's are the best and would be recommended for heavy usage (charter fishing 4+ days a week) but for recreational usage the ones by Perko should be fine.
Good Luck,
Steve

Pat -- Did you mean 30" or 36"? The last time that we talked, you thought that you were going with the 36" track.
I know what you mean about the triple mount. It does seem a bit tight to me as well.
