View Full Version : Rod length for planar boards

What length of planar board rods is recommended?
My thought is that I would like four rods that can be put into the Mr. Pike 17 rod locker. That way, I can keep these four rods with me.
Preferably, I would like the retractable butt section rod -- so that I could keep them rigged. But I am not sure how much these rods will retract.
I think that the Mr. Pike 17 will hold a 7'6" rod (I asked this question in an earlier post -- no answer yet). Should I think retractable butt section rods? Or should I go with two piece rods, which then allow me to use whatever lenght is best (say 8'6"?).
Thanks.

Personally I like the retractable P&K rods by bass pro. For the money they are a very good planner board rod. THey run $59.99 in the master catalog. The length retracted of the 8 footer is 78 inches
the length of the 8'6 is 86 inches. I wouldn't go over board and spend a lot for a planer board rod.
Another good rod for this application is the Gary Roach - planer board rod $65 - from Berkley. 8'6" that is a telescoping rod, that slips down to 6"6".
Take care

If you are going to buy some planer board rods, you might look at the combo that Bass Pro has. You can take any one of our planer board rods (7'6", 8', or 8'6") mentioned above, and add on one of the new Gold Cup Line counters - total package price $79.99.

Keith -- Can you tell me how much each of the the Gold Cup rods will retract?
Also, I know that you are passing along information about the great price for the Gold Cup combo. It certainly is attractive, but I have pretty much settled on the Daiwa reels.
So the Gold Cup rod and the P&K rods are the same price -- which would you choose and why?
Thanks in advance.

I did see that ReelMan. Can I assume that all of the rods retract in the same ratio? I was not really sure of this, so I was just checking on the Gold Cup rods.
Thanks.

Been watchin' this...I don't have an opinion on a 'good' board rod, since most any medium action baitcaster will work. Glass to high tech. BUT, one thing I do, but could be wrong,I suppose, is use two DIFFERENT rod lengths. The longer one used for the outside board, that has more belly in the line, and needs more lift in the waves. But...being that I have to use whatever I can find, like I said, they ALL work. I use the same rods for boards that I use for spinners. But then I don't own a tackle box either...

Been there, but I don't like it. What happens to your rods when you get a fish on the outside board? All of sudden you have a longer rod to reset on the inside. Might be cases where you need to reset an entire side where you could do the different rod length thing but it seems to be an expection then the rule.

Yes, you end up with the longer one on the inside, but I just lower the rodholder and it is fine. I kinda like those "problems" to occur often. Doubles seem to solve the problem even quicker. lol

The only rods that I know for sure are the 2 P&K rods that I described above. That is the 8 footer and the 8'6". I was looking the Gold Cup rods over and in the Bass Pro catalog they list them as 2 piece out fits.

I am pretty sure that there are both types for the BP Gold Cup -- as I recall, they list the two piece ror riggers and the retractable butt sections for planer boards (walleyes). I really am not sure why there is such a distinction. Perhaps someone knows the answer.

I don't know if I am following you to well on this one. The combo's are either with a down rigger rod that is 2 piece or a Walleye Angler{P&K}rod that is retractable, the ones that I describe. I am looking at pg. 39 in the master catalog of bass pro for this information.

ReelMan:
I see what you are talking about now. I had not noticed that item C was a different rod -- I thought that they were both Gold Cup rods. Thanks for clarifing that for me.
That really is a pretty tempting price on the Gold Cup/Walleye combo.

Rick,
Don't know if you got the answer to your question regarding the Gander Planer Rods. They are 2 piece. I use them and the work pretty well.
