I am 6'2" and when I measured my body to where the fish is on his I came up with 44" to 46". So like Reels said, the only way that fish is close to 56" is if the guy is AT LEAST 7'2".

Maybe he's a midget???
56" = 4 feet, 8 inches. hmmmmm......
skz
Give him credit where credit is due though. Don't see any spear markings so at least it was caught on a line.

If your making a 46 into a 56 you shouldn't photo it...

Easy guys, if I got the scoop right on this fish correctly, it was measured in a less then scientific manner and quickly released, so a guess may have been the final result?
The guy who caught it is kinda-sorta leery about the 56" measurement being 100% correct, if I read his post correctly? A lot of other folks were quick to make sure the world knew about it, so he may be getting set up in a matter of fashion, or maybe not?
Anyhoo...whaterver..lets not go into a full blown Cabin Fever induced feeding frenzy over a potentially accidental misinterpreted measurement, ok?
He was quick to release the fish and no matter what it is a very nice pike in my book.

I find it hard to believe that it is much over 40" if that. I never caught a 40" and am still waiting for anything over 38" so what do I know. I tened to under-estimate more often than not and if I had to guess, I would say that pike is 38" at best. Again, what the heck do I know though?

I don't know if it is 56 inches, but it is a pig for sure. I don't know how tall this guy is, but look at how the fish compares to his arm. then try to place where his hand would be if hanging straight down. He might not be as tall as me, but if a 35-36 inch arm (check your own shirt size) and anothe 8 inches for wrist and hand and it looks as if this fish could have another foot still hanging. Let's hear it for the guy that put it back and take a better measurement when it is caught again.

Who is he, Paul freakin' Bunyan? No way. I've seen some guides in Canada that learned to measure the same place as this guy. It's hard to say for sure, but if I had to guess I'd say 44".

I'm 6'5" and measured the length from shoulder to 2in below knee and come up with your figure as well at 44in.

No way that's a 56 incher. I'd say 40-44 inches. I feel sorry for the guy's wife as she must be real disappointed too. Oh well, all of us fisherpersons are liars anyhow, that's part of the fun. I personally have never lost a small fish, only HUGE and I mean HUGE ones, how about everyone else.

It's not 56", for sure, we've all discussed how we know that. But, a nice fish nonetheless.
Perhaps more importantly, I'm very pleased to hear it was released, whatever its size. Give the guy credit for that.

Fish look a lot different in photos than real life. You can make a fish look bigger than it is real easy by holding it right. Big people holding a fish close to the body can make a fish look smaller than it is. But I have analyzed a lot of muskie photos for magazines, and I'll tell you that there's no way that's a 56-incher. Plus, how many 56-inch northerns have EVER been caught in the US? Any? I caught a lot of big northerns out of Red Lake this year, including a couple dozen in the 14- to 20-pound class (36-41 inches). And none of them were that big, but the largest of them was close.
I say give him the benefit of the doubt that he mismeasured it, because the other alternative is that he's a liar. I'd guess it's somewhere in the low to mid 40's. However if he came and said he mismeasured and it was actually 46 instead of 56, I would accept it. If he's an exceptionaly huge guy (like 6-8, 260) I might go for 47 inches.
That's my $.02. But it sure looks like a 22- to 25-pound class fish to me.
That is somewhere between 43 - 44" No matter how tall he is....
Anyway it's a very nice fish. You know what I find to be more ridiculous than the extra foot this guy has in imagination? It's when you see a picture of some prize fish with the background being the inside of a cabin or house and the caption indicating it was C&R (catch and release.) YEA RIGHT!! Not referring to this picture...just one a buddy showed me last week.

The guy who caught the fish has now changed his mind. He admits he never actually measured the fish, and that it was probably not 56 inches, but he now says it definitely was 50 inches.

I wouldn't mine seeing that photo Jawjerker.
Considering there have been few pike over 55" caught in North America, it is a rare critter.
Could you share that with us?
Thank you,
