After swearing off going out on the ice for 48 yrs, my buddy and I decided to give it a try. We found a Guide on South Bass Island and will be heading up to Catawba Island from Pitttsburgh on the 14th.

Having never done this, I was hoping a couple you veterans could toss out some advice on what to pack.
( type of boots, how to dress for the ice, cleats ect..)

Guide is supplying the fishing equipment, bait ect. Just don't want to get out there and be miserable because I forgot something simple.

THANKS !

I would contact your guide and ask him also. Thats what he's for... To Guide you..You didn't mention if you'll be fishing from a heated shanty or not. That would make a huge difference on what to take...Will he be supplying electronics? If not a vexilar would be nice. A Thermos, snacks .. Warm clothes and boots

Even if the shanty is heated chances are the ride out will be a few miles or more of bone chilling wind and if the shanty bite is off the good guides will move you out to bucket fish other spots if your dressed for it... Over dress, you can always strip it off!

Dress in layers as if going on stand to deer hunt. Long underwear, fleece, sweater, insulated bibs, parka. You can always take things off. Pac boots, a couple pair of warm gloves, mittens work and a pair of thin ones too. Might also bring a facemask. Bring a warm hat that can cover your ears. Thermos for coffee is nice. Ice cleats help if you are bucket fishing or just walking around outside a shanty.

Good luck, have fun.
