I'm thinking about installing an electric winch on my boat trailer. I've been checking out the "Trac" winches at Cabela's and was wondering if anyone has purchased or used one of them? If I buy one it will be one of the models with the wireless remote. Any info would be great.

I too am considering an electric winch.
I would like one with wireless remote control? I would like to know the pros and cons. Do you power them off the vehicle battery or mount a battery on the trailer?

I just purchased and installed the largest electric winch that Bass Pro sells. Price was $169.00 plus tax and shipping. The winch fit into the same holes that the manuel winch used. I just had to do a little filing.
This winch has the wireless remote control and also a attachable unit. I powered mine off of the truck battery. I ran both the ground and the power wire all the way to the back bumper. Then I installed one the larger female plugs on the bumper. These units will draw about 30 amps at 12 volts. So you are going to have to use #10 or 12 wire.
The info that I cannot give you now is how good does it work. I have not had the opportunity to try it at the boat launch yet. Once I do this I will let you know. By the way I installed it on a Ranger Trailer for a 621 DVS.

I'm happy with mine so far but I used a separate battery and box in case we use my son's vehicle. I really didn't care for the cable so replaced that with a strap but have not used it since I did that so the juries still out on that. Be aware you cannot use the electric winch to hold your boat in place on the trailer. You'll have to install an extra cinching strap for that.

Mike,
Which winch did you buy? I bought the largest one that Bass Pro sells and no where in the booklet does it say that the winch will not hold the boat and that I have to add a cinch strap. I did add a safety chain but no cinch strap.

Do these electric winches have a way to manually wind the boat on if they fail?

You guys might want to install a shutoff switch inside your truck. I had a electric winch on my Yarcraft trailer and while it sat in the boat ramp parking lot two smart a$$ wonder brains pulled the cable out and hooked it to the back of the trialer to see how much it would pull !! i caught them just in time. Mine is a Powerwinch. It also has a crank that you could use manually in an emergency.
