After 3 days of fishing in rain and drizzle, when my boat would be shut off one of my speakers would start making some noises. When I turn the key back on it stops. It does have a live wire to it and an auxillary wire to the ignition. It was draining the battery down so I just unhooked it. Today I noticed when I was putting the negative cable back on the terminal there was slight sparks so I unplugged the radio and tried the terminal again and no sparks. Plugged radio in and sparks again so leaving unplugged. Does this sound like a short in the radio? It is a Sony 45Wx4, not sure if it's even waterproof it came with the boat.

probably the reason for the sparks is your radio has keep alive memory for what ever settings you have set. very little draw but will cause sparks.

First thing to check it to make sure its a marine grade radio, and marine grade speakers. Lots of people try using standard car radios and speakers, and they just don't hold up. If they are all marine grade, then the next thing to check is all the connections.

That's true, spark probably just is from the alive memory. One of the speakers still makes noises until I turn the radio on. Both are marine grade speakers, doubt the radio is as there's no markings indicating it may be and it even has a cd player and looks just like a auto radio.

My Marine clarion was making noise through one speaker for a while, power off or on. Then all the sudden the noise got shrieky, nails on a chalkboard loud then went dead. The deck still had full function, everything worked, just no sound. The internal amp fried. Hope that's not your problem...they aren't exactly cheap.

If you need to replace your old deck, check out the Sony CDXHS70MW. It has great sound, remote, mp3 jack. I'm very happy with mine compared to the clarion that fried or any other boat I've been in. I've had several guys agree...great sound.

Thanks. That is exactly the same what it's been doing. The radio did get pretty wet over the 4 days with all the rain, drizzle, wave spray and such so i'm pretty sure the water seeped in and fried up something on the circuit board. Will have to check out the radio you mentioned. Thanks again
