After reading thru the best and worst products thread and noticing that Humminbird Fishfinders was a familiar product listed in the worst portion, I was wondering what was bad about the units that you had that you listed as a bad purchase?

I have never used anything but, and to be quite honest I liked the Wide Vision unit I had for about 10 years. Granted, I was not a everyday on the water fisherman, I used it as a portable unit for Ice fishing and also for soft water use. I routinely marked perch on bottom in 50 ft. of water and Walleye on bottom in 20 feet, and I could see my jig when jigging for Walleye in 15 to 20 feet of water.

I had it stolen off my boat last summer, and replaced it with the Paramount model and haven't been real impressed. I was hoping that I had one with a bad processor in it and that when I get it back from the Repair shop, It will work as good or better than the older unit I had stolen.

Could you also tell me what kind of differences you noticed when you went to a different unit, And what that unit is.

Thanks.

I have a Wide Paramount and an X-15 Lowrance. I like to use the Paramount with I.D. +++ on and the X-15 without. I have watched these two sonars side by side and the Lowrance is more detailed. This is understandable since the cone angle of the Paramount is 90 degrees and the X15 is 36 degrees(when used with 50 khz mode).I still like the Paramount for searching but when the chips are down the X15 is far superior.( In 200 khz mode ).I marked schools of perch with such accuracy on Erie I could see hundreds of tiny arches with complete separation between them. I suspected they were perch and it was confirmed by catching a few of them.I think Hummingbird is more of a "consumer " graph. They are super easy to use and still have the best mount on the market. Mine does double duty between the back of my boat and the bowmount electric.I can move it from one spot to another in 10 seconds.Try that with the X15.If you decide to switch and can't see paying the price for the X15, the X85 is very comparable for the money. It's all in the hands of the operator.

Glad to know there are 2 of us Humminbird owners out there. I have a wide portable and use it all the time on these flooded neSD lakes to avoid old trees and bushes. It will show old barbed wire fences and stumps also. The others just don't show the bad stuff thats 6-8ft off to the side in 8-10ft of water.

I've been using the wide eye every since it came out (7 or 8 years) with no problems. I use it on erie can can pick perch up in 65ft. of water. Also a great finder for searching for eyes while at crusing speed. Can't complain the whole time I had it. My next purchase might be a x-15 or a lowrance product. But for the price and simply function I think you can't go wrong with the bird.
Good Luck!!
