I've found that the Palomar works best for all applications.

We use uniknot for splicing mono to fireline, and palomar for attaching anything else to fireline. You have to be a bit careful and pull the right ends (keep the tag end from "looping") to keep it spaced as you tie, as fireline doens't quite slide as easy. But once you get knot tied, they seem to work good for us. My brother got this little knot typing tool that fly fishermen use for tippets, and it works great and easy for the uniknot. Can't remember the name - maybe he will post it here is he sees this...

The uniknot works just fine for joining fireline - to mono.
However, I don't like to take the time to tie a uni knot. Since, the knot is under several layers of line - I don't find that having a tag end on the like is a problem. So, I tie a surgeons knot. Basically take the mono and fire line - and tie an overhand knot, but before tighting the line, run the line - over hand through the loop - 4 more times. Basically you have 5 overhand knots tied through the same loop.
Wet the line well, as you tighten the loop. Leave the tag ends about 1/2 inch long - to insure that they don't slip back and - on the first wrap of the fireline or other line over the backing - insure that you have the tag ends lying flat on the backing line. Then go ahead and wrap as usual. This knot holds very well, and since, you don't run the backing through the guides, the longer tag ends don't cause a problem.
Take care

Use the knot guide on the fireline package. I think it is called the double uniknot. Never had a fish break this knot. Fish ON!

mmillelacs, nice link! Ive been using the Berkely Braid when tying fireline. A little tricky at first but strong when tied right. I tried using the trilene knot but the tag end would slip through...you must of done something different. Lots a slots!
