What would you consider to be the best line for deep (30+ feet) jigging in extremely clear water?

That is the only condition/technique where I prefer Fireline to monofilament. I use a flourocarbon leader on the fireline.

When Fireline first came out I thought it would be ideal for deep jigging the prespawn eyes on Erie. I rigged 1 rod with 10/4 Fireline and 1 with 8# mono. Fished all spring with the 2 rods, and was very surprised to discover the mono outfished the fireline 3 to 1. This is not intended to start an arguement (NOT AT ALL). I am simply stating my experience. I'm somewhat at a loose to explain it, other than it obviously effect the look of the lures or the way they moved, because the number of bites was way off on the Fireline. You could actualy feel the large minnows kicking on the fireline rod, and catching a fish on it was a blast, but we went away from it. Good luck what ever you choose.

I wonder if the fish can feel us as well as we can feel them with Fireline? I love it for trolling and casting cranks, but not for jigging for walleyes. I think it works fine for jigging for fish like trout and bass that really slam a jig, but may not be approppriate for finesse situations. Just my 2 cents worth.

I do alot of deep jigging in late summer.I too tried fire line and found it to be unefective.Good feel of bottom but cut way down the bites compared with mono.I have used Trilene 8 or 6lb - xl for many years. Great line.
The option useing fire line woudl be to run a mono leader at 2ft length or more depending on water clarity. A quality swevel Is also needed to cut back on line twist.

I have used both and also have found less than satisfactory results when using Fireline, I also use Silver thread in 8# test against the Fireline in 6# test and had far less fish with the fireline in deep water. The opposite was true when fishing jigs shallow, I did better with the fireline and lost less due to breaks.

I think the stretch has a lot to do with the action in the deep water. Deep I usually fish with a hard jigging action and shallow I use a slow action and this may explain the difference.

Try it and see what you get for results.

Shallow water fish are usually aggressive and hit harder. Deep fish tend to be nuetral or negative and sometimes play with the bait and spook more easily, so Fireline is probably not the best choice. Just a theory.
