View Full Version : Bottomline 4300
Was in the market for a new sonar.
Thought i decided on a Vexilar Edge but
after checking out the Bottomline 4300 I
see it has more pixels per inch then many other units.
It's my understanding that the more pixels per inch the
more detailed picture you get.
Does anybody have any input on these units?

The only pixel count I a, concerned with are the vertical pixel count, these are what will seperate two or more objects from one another. The bottom line 4300 has 320 verticle pixels and the vexilar has the same, the main thing I like on the edge is the dual frequency transducer that has one at 107khz and the other at 400khz. One reason ii like this is most all other graphs run at 192 or 200 so you can run this one and another unit at the same time with little to no feedback problems.
One thing I think most people dont realize is the sidefinder will not give you an accurate account on what your seeing off to the side, Dick Knutson of Genetron might be able to explain this one a bit better than I.

You can get dead spots in the horizontal cone just as you do in a vertical cone. If the cone hits a target horizontally it may interpret it as the end of the cone thus leaving the water beyond the object in a dead zone.
You will need to be sure to have the side scan set to the appropriate grid designation in order to lessen this effect. Open water situations where you do not have shallow water shelves to deal with will not cause this effect to appear.
