Hi
The rain and warm temperatures have dramatically changed the surface of the lake - much of the snow has melted and ATV's have replaced snowmobiles as the vehicle-of-choice. I'd still bring a shovel, but unless you hang up in a wind row you shouldn't need it. Some areas still have a significant amount of water on them... others have dried completely. Be sure to check with your resort as you access to identify any potential trouble spots. Ice thickness is still in excess of 24 inches over most of the lake.
There has been very little angling pressure on Mille Lacs this week - the action is similar to what we've seen over the past few weeks. The best walleye bite we're seeing is on the mud flats (7-mile, Greg's, Krause) toward the top edge in 24 feet. The action is split evenly between the set lines and jigging with a small rattle spoon. Green and yellow are your 2 top colors. Perch action is showing some signs of improvement around the Hennepin Island area - some of these fish are coming from water as deep as 35 feet. Waxies and Eurolarva on a #2 yellow Pimple are the ticket here. You might even catch a stray tullibee!
There has been a lot of confusion about exactly WHEN the fish houses need to be removed. For Mille Lacs, the removal date is midnight of the first Monday in March (3-2-2009). Even some "official" sources have spewed inaccurate info as recently as this morning, so we went directly to the statute - you're looking at Statute 97C.355 subdivision 7. Here's the wording directly from the statute that they would write the ticket from: www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/statutes/

Finally, Ole feared his wife Lena wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told Ole there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. Here's what you do," said the Doctor, "stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response." That evening, Lena is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and Ole was in the den. He stood about 40 feet away, and in a normal tone he asks, 'Lena, what's for dinner?"No response. So Ole moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Lena, what's for dinner? "Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from Lena and asks, "Lena, what's for dinner?"Again Ole gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. "Lena, what's for dinner?" Ole hears nothing. So he walks right up behind her. "Lena, what's for dinner?" "Ole, for the fifth time, CHICKEN!"
Have a great weekend,
