I WAS OUT FISHING THE RIVER THIS WEEKEND AND ON SATURDAY THE WATER TEMP WAS 44 AND ON SUNDAY IT WAS 47.. BUT WE HAD A WARM RAIN ALL DAY ON SUNDAY SO I'M GUESSING THATS WHY IT CAME UP 3 DEGREES..SO MY QUESTION IS...IF THE SURFACE TEMP READS 47 AND I'M FISHING IN 10-15 FEET OF WATER IS THERE A WAY TO JUDGE WHAT THE BOTTOM TEMP IS..LIKE FOR EVERY FOOT OF WATER IS THERE A COUPLE OF DEGREES DIFFERENCES???FROM WHAT I READ ON W.C SHOULD THE EYES BE SPAWNING AT THOSE TEMP???
AND IN TWO DAYS I DIDN'T GET A FISH..LOST TWO BUT COULDN'T TELL WHAT I HAD.......THANKS TO ALL THAT HELP........JERRY

There is no way to judge what the water temperature is at a given depth below the surface according surface temps. The only way to know is to drop a temperature gauge down to that level you wish to check and read it.

My guess would be on a river the temps would be fairly uniform. On a lake there is a lot of difference.

I'd say a river should be mixed pretty well, and depending on how close to the dam you are,it's pretty close to the temp. thru and thru. I also live in PA.near the Pgh. airport, and fish the Ohio and with that water temp, they're probably spawning. The full moon was just last week, and they may be very tuff for a while.See you on the water!
