Hello, can anyone offer me their input regarding the quality/reliability of a 1991 90 horse Evinrude V4. The pros/cons things to watch for would be of great help.
Thanks.

I can't help w/ that year but I had a 1984 Evinrude 90 V4 0n a 17' alumacraft DC. It pushed the boat to about 40 mph pulled "A-LOT" of kids and fished Wi,Mi,SD,ND,&Canada without a hitch. After 18 years of my use I gave it to my son and 6 years later its still running strong!!! I can't say enough about the durability of that "Ole" V4. In the past 24 years it's had the gear case oil changed pretty regular an maybe 4-5 sets of plugs. I think that generation of V4's was one of best motors out there.

I have run a few of the early Evinrudes. the biggest single thing I have run into is the ring lands want to build carbon and stick the rings. Poor design in the ring lands, Evinrude finally did make some changes which helped. Blew 3 Evirudes that way. Once I wized up and started running synthetic 2 cycle oil never had a problem after that.

Hello- I've owned my 1988 Evinrude 88 SPL V4 almost since new. The 88 SPL is the non oil injected version of the 90 hp motor. It has run flawlessly. Never one problem. It has had zero maintence, zero spark plug changes, and has been fogged for storage for only about half of the winters. It also seems tolerant to burning older gas.

Throw some seafoam in every tank full and run it like you stole it, the older 2 strokers are very dependable.

I have sold dozens of the 90, 110, 115s. VROs and water pumps are the usual reasons for eng. failure. Have your carbs cleaned every 4 or 5 years depending hours of use and have your warning system checked. More than 1/2 the failures I see the warning horn did not sound. I run a 1990 115 and love it.

if it has the VRO system you may want to consider having it disconnected and mix the gas oil yourself that way you know your motor is being lubed correctly. As stated above the VRO system origionally was not that reliable. Some never had problems lots did and when the warning system went off it was to late.My motor had the VRO disconnected and I mix it myself.Sure a little inconvenient but takes a whole extra minute to do at the gas station and is peace of mind. Also keep some seafoam in here and run it and enjoy.
