View Full Version : GPS/Mapping: what if you don't have all the lake maps?

Does this unit essentially just become a plotter unit like the old GPS units? It still has navigational value without downloaded maps correct? Reason I ask is that someone had posted in the archives that if you don't buy the maps, then you shouldn't really buy a unit that is capable of it. I am assuming I won't be able to afford all the maps for the lakes I would like to fish, but still want plotting capabilities of a GPS on a non-downloaded lake. Thanks for steering me straight.

You are correct sir. If you don't have a map for a lake, it will operate like a GPS without mapping capabilities. A mapping unit is just like a non-mapping unit except it puts a map in the background. I just got a mapping unit and may get the topographic map for hunting purposes but I don't plan on getting any lake maps. I still use it for fishing and have transferred all the waypoints from my old unit to it.

Even, if you don't have the lake maps, but if you have a good mapping unit - you will have a built in background map - that should show most lake outlines.
Actually having the lake outline - is pretty good for lots of different areas.
At least the lake outline will keep you from getting lost, and guide you around points etc. in the dark and fog.
Then, if you are lucky enough to catch fish, and or want to place "icons" to mark dangers, areas where fish have been caught "etc." you will soon have your own customized "Lake Map".
Take care
