Hi

The last day of the walleye and northern pike season is Sunday - here's your last chance to snag a few before the open water season that begins May 9th! So far this week the bite on Mille Lacs has been hit-or-miss - as with the past few weeks, the mud flats are giving up the bulk of the walleye. Stick near the top edge in 24 feet with a small rattle spoon or a Jiggin' Rap. No particular flat stood out among the others this week. The perch action started to pick up a little, with much of the action coming from the southeast quadrant of the lake. Look for 30+ feet of water with a soft bottom. This has primarily been a "bug bite" (wax worms, Eurolarva, freshwater shrimp) up to this point, but some of the bigger fish are hitting minnows as well.

I attended the Fisheries Input Group meeting with the DNR last night. To sum up the outcome in a few sentences, I expect that the 18-28 inch release slot will remain in place pending Commissioner Holsten's approval. The official version should come sometime in April. The DNR's representatives also commented about zebra mussels, VHS, milfoil and a stepped-up enforcement involving the transportation of water (livewells, buckets, bilge) as anglers leave Mille Lacs. I'll write more on this as it develops.

For Mille Lacs, the removal date for fish houses is midnight of the first Monday in March (3-2-2009).

We received less than 1/2 inch of snow this week, and most of it blew off the lake in Wednesday's high winds. There is VERY little snow on the lake other than the wind rows and around obstructions. Travel is good - ATV's (or trucks) have replaced snowmobiles as the vehicle of choice.
