What trailer is better for my new Alumacraft 185 Tournament Sport, a 4000lb tandem axel bunk or a 3000lb single axel roller? The trailer will be a Shoreland'r. I need to make a decision this weekend.
Thanks

Hi, I have the same boat. I went with the Shorelander roller. Dealer tried to sell me a Prestige bunk and I think I should have listened to him. A single axle trailer is enough for the 185, mine pulls very easy and I can roll it around in the garage by myself. Can't do that with a tandem trailer. Some of the lakes I fish have shallow ramps so the roller had to be my first choice. I refused to take delivery on mine because it came with Carlisle tires(JUNK). They traded tires from a Ranger trailer that had Marathons :) Let me know if you have any questions about your TS 185 .

I bought this same rig last year and upgraded to a custom Prestige trailor and I couldn't be happier. Although it is a single axle, It is a beast of a trailor with goodyear marathons and sealed oil bathed hubs. The package came with a shorelander roller trailor and I wanted a bunk trailor. I think I paid $800.00 for the upgrade but It was money well spent.

Real question is the bunk easier on the boat than the roller?

A bunk will offer more even support of the boat.

The bunk trailer will give more support but that's not an issue with an Alumacraft because it has a double thickness hull full length, not just in the front. My last bunk trailer sanded the paint off the bottom of my boat. Gravel road to the ramp, bunks get wet unloading, gravel parking at the ramp, a little wind and some traffic, now your bunks become sandpaper.

I have a 1700 Lund Explorer. My dealer recomended a Prestiege 6 bunk trailer. I can't say enough good things about this trailer.

Most 18's you will see single axle. but I would prefer something like a 3500 lb axle, since total weight of the rig on the road is what you want to keep in mind. Is Shorelander the only brand the dealer offers? If so, they have a 3400# bunk model.

Boat wt 1680
Motor you did not say- but say avg 450
38 gal fuel 304
4 batteries 250

Total 2684
Add tackle, gear, TM, kicker? etc. 400# your up to 3100lbs

A tandem might be bit much for an 18' rig.

You also need to add in the weight of the trailer itself. The axel needs to carry that also. With this analagy you are eysily over the weight rating of a #3500 axel.

I can't speak for roller vs. bunk, I've only owned rollers, but i would go with the highest weight rated trailer you can. JMHO.
