'86 Johnson 40hp no spark?

I just acquired a winter boat with a 40hp Johnson on the back. The motor has electric start, power tilt & trim, and oil injection. It turns over but wont start. The plugs show that fuel is getting to the cylinder, but it acts like there is no spark. On the side of the motor there is a plug to hook up the ignition. Does the ignition switch have to be plugged in for the motor to run or will it run if the iginition switch is not plugged in to this motor?

Any ideas on what else to check would be appreciated.

Is the safety kill switch plugged it??

Look on top of the fly wheel. If there is an inspection opening, turn the flywheel by hand and look for the coils. Look to see if they are cracked or broken.
