Failed again to draw in Wyoming, for an archery tag (Now have 3 pref. pts.) Looking for a hunt in another state (Elk or Mule deer) would prefer to archery hunt ( Maybe 2-4 of us)on our own. Looking for a drop camp, a place to rent a cabin or a place we can set up a tent. Would like to be in an area with a fair amount of game, over the counter or easy draw area and NO Wolves. Any help would be appreciated

Southwest Colorado:

Over-the-counter archery tags for elk (either sex). Dolores area. Lots of public land (San Juan National Forest). No wolves (we've never seen any). Relatively high (8,000-11,000 ft.) and steep but lots of nooks and crannies for elk. Moderate hunting pressure (hey, it's public land). We tent camp (un-guided) at 10,500 ft.

Look for the steepest, nastiest canyons. No humans, more critters. Not for the faint of heart, though. You have to be in shape and prepared to work your rear off. Know how you're going to get an animal out before you kill it.

We've hunted there 5 times (one bow, one muzzleloader, three rifle seasons). We've killed three elk total (all during rifle seasons). Got close a couple of times with the bow, and I'm hooked for life! If you ever hear one bugle within 100 yards, you will be too! Someday, I'm gonna put an arrow into one of those bad boys!

South Dakota has unlimited archery deer tags for non residents and more public land than you could cover in a lifetime. Hunting pressure is minimal until firearm seasons get going and tapers off dramatically after. Hunt what you want prairie, bluffs, buttes, river bottoms, forests, or cropland. We got it all.

Grub, headed just north of Drango in September. Hope to draw a muzzleloader tag. Awesome area!
