I'm in the market for some new ice rods for pan fish, perch, crappie ect... I've noticed the better brands and signature series type rods don't have reel seats or the typical plastic O-shaped keepers that pinch the reel seat feet. So what is the lastest buzz for attaching reels to the rods with say cork handles and no reel keepers? Thanks

I use zip ties and then duct tape or electrical tape. All my ice rods without the seats have that set up.

At the hardware store, next to electrical tape is some tape called splicing tape. I comes with a vinyl protector strip that you peel off and discard. This tape is thicker than electrical tape and not slick. It only sticks to itself and does not leave adhesive on things.

Good fishing,

I agree, this tape or the self bonding silicon tape is a great choice. Does not leave a sticky residue, feels slip resistant in the hand. Seals up like shrink wrap nice and tight. Similar to sail repair tape.

Another material I use is Bow camo tape, it is like a surgical bandage material. It is reusable and offers a firm grip on larger reel seats on predator rods.

Very simply put.
Whereever you want to mount your reel, take black electricians tape and put at least one wrap around the handle that you never take off.
The tape will act as a buffer to the handle, is easy to clean up, and by not removing it, it won't tear up the handle.

Then, place your reel on the handle, and use the same electicians tape, tape it to the handle. A couple wraps on the front and back of the reel seat will take care of the mounting.

Always keep a roll of tape in your tackle box, so that if you need to change a reel, remove it for cleaning, or anything else, you can quickly unwrap the tape, remove the reel and then use fresh tape to put it back on.

Easy simple, no cold transfer to your hands and it works very well.

-------
I dislike any thing that sticks up or protrudes on the handle of a fishing reel. That is why I don't use tie wraps, clamps or anything else which sticks up, puts pressure on my fingers or transfers cold to my fingers. That is why , I always remove everything on the handle except the plain cork, or eva or wood. Then, I use only smooth electrical tape to secure the reel, covering all exposed metal or plastic that might conduct cold to my fingers while fishing. I am careful when taping the reel seat in place to insure that there are only smooth wraps with no ridges or anything else which can create pressure on my hand or fingers.

p.s.
If I happen to pick up a rod which has rings, or bands, or sliders on the handle - I will cut them off or remove them before using the rod the first time.

Then, I use the tape as noted above to mount my reel.

Take care

Thanks guys for the feedback. Figured some sort of tape was they way to go. I would think a additional bonus of the tape would be a bit lighter, better "bite" feel on the rod with less weight. Anyway, will get to the hardware store to get some of the better tape and go that way. Thanks! Good fishing!
