Headed up to Stevens Bay/Nestor Falls area 3/12 thru 3/21 for some snowmobiling & hard water fishing. Planning on targeting eyes, crappie and maybe some lake trout over on Crow Lake during the trip. Any suggestions as to bait(s) and depths to start with? How's the ice out around Hay Island, anyone know? Appreciate any info I can get ahead of time, it's been too many (5) years since I've gotten to make this trip and I'd be most grateful for help/advice!
Thanks!!

Anyone? Maybe a link or two for some fishing/ice reports/condition?
Thanks!

HeyBill!
Got back a week ago today, actually forgot to put in a report, sorry!! Did great on the crappie, like shooting fish in a barrel. Found them out by Hay Island, south side in 40 fow stacked like cord wood!! It'd only take about 15 minutes to get a limit of nice 1-1.5 lb crappie. Used a glow white/red jig spoon, drop it down just above them about a foot and one would come up and whack it every time, sure was fun.
Didn't fish Crow but one afternoon, had a lot of "lookers" that'd run up, take a peek and run back down, but did hook up with a couple of locals and went over to Weissner (misspelled more than likely) and had a ball with the lakers. Nothing big, but 4 lbs was pretty common, and for this Okie, they sure were a ball on light tackle. Found them mostly in 35-50 fow, and used a white Zoom Super Fluke on a 1/2 oz glow white jig head! Fished one day up on Kishnatina (spelling here too) and had a ton of lookers there as well but no takers. Thoroughly enjoyed my trip, hope to make a repeat trip up there next year too!

Steve,
Thanks for the report. I fish Hay Island every fall for the crappies, sounds like it was even better than in Sep. Best bait I've found for mid Sep. has been a red/white tube jig, so some things don't change.
I fished Kishkutena soft water back in the 60's, took the 5 portages in and camped there for a few days. We didn't get any trout, but caught lots of smallmouth and some muskies.
Sounds like you had a good trip.
