The more I use this unit the better I like it. I'll have to revise one of my previous comments about visibility of what's on the screen. After experimenting with the 14 or so color palettes available, you should be able to find a combination you like.

Overall strengths in no particular order:
1-Ability to show a clutter free display.
2-Improved visibility closer to the bottom.
3-Wide cone angle in shallow water works very well.
4-Ability to eliminate interference from other fishfinders
5-Adjustable ping speed. This is available on all Lowrances but I list it since it is absent on Hbirds.

Weaknesses:
1-Menu systems are awkward. This is not a Lowrance or HDS specific weakness. It is common. Vexilar has buttons on the front. The other HDS models have programmable buttons on the front. If you don't like negotiating through all these menus you should consider a different model.
2-The width of the A-Scope is too narrow. This is common to all Lowrance models, not just the HDS. I use this a lot. The width of the A-Scope should be double what it is.
3-I could not find an option to place grid lines across the screen. This is another option I like very much. It may not mean anything to you, but I want thin lines running horizontally all the way across the screen at least at 20 foot intervals.

Today I called Lowrance technical support. I've seen posts on lots of boards about how terrible their tech support was. Today was just one call so that does not constitute proof of anything but one call. My wait time was about 30 seconds. I'd call that excellent. Troy was the person's name taking my call. He was professional and courteous, answered all my questions to my satisfaction and never rushed me. All I have to go on is this one call, but on the basis of it, I would give Lowrance high marks on tech support.

My experience with Lowrance has always been like yours.
Wait time can be longer, which seems to be most peoples
main complaint. Puts them in a bad mood before questions
are ever asked.
Menues can be a hassle. But with a sonar only models once
it is setup to ones liking, then you can usually just turn
it on and be ready to look for fish.
Lowrance has a good color selection. after trying them all
over and over I settled for the one called "ice view". Don't
know why it is called by this name but I like the colors.
Thanks for you input on the 5x.

LWinches,

Does the 5x come in the 50/200Khz or is it just the 83/200Khz. Couldn't remember?

4-Ability to eliminate interference from other fishfinders. Would this be true if I was to run another unit (seacharter 480df). I was just thinking of using the GPS on this unit and maybe updating.

I've seen the new units, but haven't done much research on them. Thanks...

hay-addi,

The 5X comes with either 50/200Khz or 83/200Khz. You make the choice when you place your order. I can't predict this interference business. I can tell you that I mounted the Humminbird 83/200Khz transducer immediately beside of the Lowrance, maybe one inch separating them. I expected a monumental problem, especially in 100 ft water. Changing the filter on the Lowrance completely eliminated any interference on it. I was prepared to also change the ping speed but I didn't need to. There was also interference from the Lowrance on the Humminbird (777c2). Changing it's filter helped, but never eliminated it.

I also have a Humminbird Matrix 37 that has been a Lowrance killer. Anyone who has a Lowrance and pulls up beside me (happens a lot), they're blacked out. This has happened repeatedly. I turned on the 37 just to see what effect it had on the HDS. It never blinked. No problem at all.

I cannot and do not guarantee you will get the same results. I can say I've not had this kind of success before eliminating interference. If you buy one, I hope it works for you too. If it doesn't, and it might not, it's just one of those freaky things.
