I have a 1996 Mec Tiller. I need to fixt the switch box and motor mounts. I was given a price by Stubs Marine of $905. Since these guys are *******s I figure about $700-$800 max anywhere else. Plus I am blowing relays once every 2 months.

I looking to upgrade my motor to a 4-stroke. As some of you might have read already on other threads, the boat is a 1991 690 Ranger. A few mentioned to fix the 2S Merc because the price of a new 4S Yami is too high to get the resale back out of it. I am looking at a 2006 90hp 4S Yami with a 6yr warranty from today (or when I pull the trigger). It will end up costing me about $6,150K installed and done.

The first thing I want it quiteness when trolling...and by the way I want to troll slow. I was told the older 2S may troll slower. Then hole shot and speed. I could care less about gas efficiency (unless it's a HUGE differenc then I may change my tune)

Should I buy the Yami for 6K vs. fixing the 2S for $800 plus other stuff that SHOULD be done to it? I figure I can trade it in on a Vantage since my motor got stolen out of Stubb Marine parking lot and they wont do a **** thing about it (not that they lagally should). The big thing is they are are down right rude about the whole issue.

I back troll a bunch and front troll raps.

I'm thinking that you could have gotten a lot of good info had you not chosen to rip somebody on the net.

Maybe you have a legit reason, maybe you don't. Fact is, work it out with them don't bring it here. Now if you get someone asking an opinion on that dealer then the doors open for a civil discussion.

I'm not ripping on you it's just that this isn't really the place in my opinion.

BTW,.................... Yamaha.

Thanks. Point taken and will vent elsewhere. You can ditch this thread if you'd like.

Let's just skip the old motor new motor thing. It's a hard decision, but you have the things to consider. Let's just say your going to get a new motor.

As far as what 'new' motor - The first criteria is which dealership would you like to deal with?

If you had all brands covered in quality dealerships, I'd suggest looking at a Suzuki. All of the 4 strokes are good, but I believe the Suzuki will troll down better than the others, and that is on the top of your list. If you had not listed trolling speed criteria, you could draw from a hat.

Isn't there a mercury and ranger dealer just north of the place you brought your boat to get service done? Maybe check them out Central Marine

For what you are trying to do you should at least take a look at the 90 E-Tec. Now i know you said 4-stroke because its quiet and you want hole shot. The E-Tecs are really quiet and with the 2 stroke you will have a much faster hole shot than with a 4-stroke. I spent 1/2 the summer hauling around a 620T/150 E-Tec to TestRides. During one of these rides in Iowa i had a guy tell me that the 150 E-Tec was much quieter than his 90 4-stroke!!

The E-Tec's are all 3 star, and the motor can be set to idle at 460 rpm, thus meaning a much slower troll.

Give me a call be happy to answer any more questions you may have.
